Quite a hectic period for us here on IDMW over the last days, from a couple of disturbing bugs in our communication system (the dark side of technology) to the current construction of our new interface, the design of which is almost done, not to mention some networking project we’re currently working on with a handful of activists. As many things which have kept us aside from our usual publishing schedule and therefore in the moral obligation to address you our deepest apologies…

WMC’08: THIS IS NOW, THAT WAS THEN...
Time has now come to think about getting back to life for those who’ve made this WMC what it has been this year… Did it fulfil the expectations of both its actors and attendees? We may expect the reactions as to how it was seing the light on the heels of the usual recovery period following such a hectic week. Meanwhile, we’ve made our thang to bring you what we’ve thought as to be the most representative coverage in regards to our beliefs.
We would like to address our warmest thanks to the people who’ve contributed makin’ this possible, from those who’ve given some of their precious time to answer our questions to those who’ve provided us with their new and upcomin’ material. Not to mention the ones who’ve added their words editorially speaking.
This WMC’08 now behind, the moment has come for us to step out of the pressure for a bit. Meanwhile those of you who’ve been away from their screens for some reason are left with the opportunity to have a check at our WMC'08 Digest during the comin’ days. Full details while clicking on the (white) headlines. Peace y’all

WMC’08 – READER'S DIGEST
The most awaited Miami gathering is just a few hours away. As an appetizer to this year’s festivities or a reminder of last one’s, our 2007 reader’s digest. Souvenirs, souvenirs!
Right on time as an opener to the Miami festivities, we welcome for the third time in a raw NYC-based BounceFM head Muema Lombe delivering his comments as far as our environment is concerned. No need for litterature, our long time friend goes straight to the point…
12 years of continuous devotion to the house scene have seen SpiritOfHouse.com honcho Mike Fossati makin’ a name among the handful of taste makers on a worldwide scale. Nuff reasons to have him representing IDMW during the Conf’ with his most awaited daily SpiritOfMiami reports…
03/25 - CONSORTIUM MUZIK: VANGUARDING THE SOUL... This WMC’08 marks the first 12 months of existence for Big Cee’s imprint which has managed to come up with an interrupted flow of outstanding releases over the year, putting back the so called dance music to where it was back til the beginning of the eighties. In other words (to cut & paste those of the late Miles Davis), anything as long as it’s good…
From PRing to DJing, writing and eventually running her own label, Favouritizm head, Sarah Foote stands as the perfect illustration of the famous DiY spirit inherited from the Brits. No doubt how music would probably not sound as good without her…
Networking… There’s nothing like it as brilliantly demonstrated by this amalgamation of talents goin’ from strength to strength as years go. More about it with Julius the Mad Thinker in the driver’s seat…
From Kenny Dope to DJ Spinna not to mention Coldcut back in the day, hip-hop background has no doubt helped establishing a new approach/standard in the shapin’ of house (dance) music with Bay Area-based artist Carlos Mena adding his particular twist to it…
With a handful of upcoming activists from DJ Bruno to The Shadow kings not to mention Seed Recordings label head, Bradford James who recently joined the IDMW editorial crew, looks like the famous Boston cream has definitely found a new outlet…
Straight into the depth of one of the most respected webradios in the world with mastermind Sammy Rock who recently launched his own label…
What a better choice as to put an end to our series of WMC’08 daily features than welcomin’ Mark Brown in charge of this Chicago-based label credited for havin’ initiated the perceptible process of change on the approach of the modern groove…
From the most awaited remix package of ‘Warriors Of Africa’ on Shelter Records to the release of his debut LP awaited later in the year, not to mention his massive retouch of V’s ‘Born Again’ alongside the latest on Vega Records, our man’s name looks like on everyone’s lips. He told us he couldn’t do it this year in Miami due to a heavy schedule. So we’ve thought it would be good bringin’ him to you…

WMC’08 – THE TIME IS NOW!!!
After almost a fortnight workin’ on it, time has now come for us to give you further details as to what is due to appear in the comin’ daze on IDMW.
Interviewise, expect none other than people, be they artists, DJ’s, label managers, broadcasters, PR’s, reviewers who we feel as openin’ a new path for hope, as opposed to the countless list of cut’n’ pasters around who, by their daily mediocrity, have progressively reduced the so called dance music to the rank of what many of us have ended up considering as a senseless unidentifiable magma (cf. our ongoing headlines list above as day go).
Musicwise – thanks to those who’ve sent us an unpreceeding amount of upcomin’ releases for the occasion – you’ll be delivered a special series of dedicated columns during the week supposed to cover your expectations depending on the state of mind you’re in. Be you addicted to soulful jams, atmospheric grooves or straight to da floor beats…
As usual, expect regular updates brought by SpiritOfHouse head Michael Fossati in addition to further reports by the likes of appointed local correspondants with extra pics provided by Jacksonville-based Mary Lane.
To all of you, wherever you are, thank you for comin’…

THE HEAT IS ON!
Although the forecast remains no surprisingly true to what it usually is on this part of the globe by the time writing those lines – in other words, very much so so – we can slowly but surely feel the heat climbing here at IDMW HQ. The reason being no more suprisingly the current development of both our activities & presence, but also the approach of our community’s yearly rendez-vous by the sunny shores of Florida.
Yes, you’ve guessed it, we’re progressively readying ourselves for another 24/7 session in perspective with an impressive amount of various updates to feed your appetites, speakin’ of which you’ll be given further details no later than next week.
At least, if there’s one thing we may already point out, it’s the fact that the period has never sounded so exciting with an awesome amount of huge vibes to getcha house headz straight to heaven. And be assured, we’ll make our very best to spread the word(s) so that you’ll be properly updated with those not to be missed pieces of art we’ve thanfully been provided with during the last days. Beginning with the publication next week of the TraxsourceINDAMIX Pre WMC issue where you’ll be given sneak previews of some of the most awaited cuts to rock the floors during the Miami Spring Break. As for now, back to work fighting against the clock with the hope to have everything sorted out right on time. Peace y’all, MFSB

In Da Mix: DO THE RIGHT THING...
|

DO THE RIGHT THING!!!
Ever wondered who’s doin’ what for some time? Hmmm! Another of those themas speakin’ of which there’s a huge amount of things to be said. Maybe because the days we’re livin’ have led (obliged?) many of us to express ourselves on a whole array of different fronts to run our respective businesses. From DJing to producing, label managing, PRing, writing and eventually webmastering, even though it is reknown that a good DJ doesn’t necessarily make a good producer and vice versa…
Of course, we gotta live with our time, but let’s never forget how, despite the unceasing evolution of technology, nuttin’ starts from a simple click. How many are those reactions of people here and there who, despite absolute no knowledge/training and eventually skills, would like to have their own page/blog/website ready to within a 30 seconds time, then figuring they will be the kings of the world the minute after??? For f*** sake, c’mon! This has never been the way this works. And it’s pretty much about the same in regards to every domain, with music being NO exception!!! I mean, everyone can release music on his own nowadays as opposed to recently, but what’s the point doin’ it if there’s nothing behind??? What’s the point havin’ a choon made available on a downloading platform if no one’s never heard of it, beginning with those supposed to spread the word??? And the most ironical side of the things is that a package will first be introduced as a… promo – supposedly then for free, like those little samples of perfume – speakin’ of which the listener X or Y will have to pay even more than for a said commercial release, meanwhile almost nothing will be done… promowise as far as those reputedly in charge of displayin’ the info are concerned…
Devotion label head, DJ/producer Ruben Mancias recently mentioned the case, explainin’ how even the DJ’s themselves have ended up losin’ their supposed status as prescriptors. I then let all of you, readers, figuring the nightmare that such a situation can be for the handful of editors remaing on the circuit nowadays, with people eventually not even responding to requests for being provided with the information!!!
Yup folks, this is pretty much where we’re at and it’s then no surprising to see so many real talents remaining in the shadow, because of an ever evolving disorganization of the market going close to anarchy. On such circumstances, I can’t hardly help myself wondering what many of those people bein’ responsible of such a situation are gonna do in Miami apart from doin’ not much more than their yearly Me, Myself & I session!!! Not that much to be excited then… MFSB

UNDER (RE)CONSTRUCTION…
4 years and a ½ … 54 months… 234 weeks!!! And the list goes on since we first appeared on screens… With almost as many changes in regards to our environment, should it be the market - meaning your expectations - with the push of an ever evolving technology. Nuff reasons putting us in the position to redefine both our positioning and the concept of this space…
Most of you regular of those pages should have noticed how we’ve recentered our editorial coverage over those last weeks. Not due to some form or laziness or lack of motivation. But simply because we’ve broadened our activities… Most notoriously while developping our presence on a whole bunch of different fronts, from MySpace to Traxsource, not to mention our liaison with DJonTV + other projects currently under maturation speakin’ of which you’ll be informed as time goes.
As a matter of fact, and further to recently explained here, we’ve had to adapt ourselves to this ever changing environment. We’ve never missed an occasion to point our finger on what’s goin’ right as bad, such as the lack of (media) exposure which our community has encountered for ages. So expect us to give it a push further more, not only in terms of illustrations to our editorials – beginning with the launch of our weekly IDMW HOT#10 displayin’ what we believe to be some among the best pieces of music of the moment – but also while providing you with a tool in regards to the content we have on offer. Yes, you’ve guessed it: nuttin’ else but a new site, the skeleton of which being currently under ongoing conception process… Peace y’all. MFSB

In Da Mix: DO IT YO'SELF!
|

DO IT YO’SELF!
Let’s not take our minds on a trip… The golden period when the lucky ones of us were offered fortunes to run a website has gone for quite some time. This, in regards to the current environment, puttin’us in the obligation to be very cautious with our respective finances and the necessity to adapt ourselves with the hope the situation being ours nowadays will find some positive change…
As usual, there are two ways to have a look at the bottle. Some of us will consider it as half empty with others tendin’ to have some opposite view. As a blatant demonstration, still have in mind those words from Kevin Hedge who we met a a few weeks ago when being asked about the contribution of technology on the making process of music: No doubt how the arrival of technology has had consequences on the way music is being put out nowadays, but on the other side, it has allowed all of us to come with things – you being a pretty good illustration of this with your series of live footages – no one could have reasonably thought of a few years ago! And this what we’ve got to point out rather than focusing on the bad side of the things that each evolution inevitably brings…
Of course, like everything, one can always do better, but let’s never forget how, by the time of being confronted to an offer whatever it may be, it’s not only a matter of talent/skills by the likes of the one responsible of the latest, but also the obligation of a minimum of financial investment makin’ the things even harder when you – the visitors – have been accustomed to have almost everything for… free!
As a direct result, this leaves us – the producers in the wide sense of the term – no other choice than bein’ left on our own devices and take the necessary time to achieve things as opposed to call for the next external help that would allow us goin’ much quicker but also be in the meantime synonymous with some huge investment… MFSB

THE LION SLEEPS TONIGHT…
Some of you might fairly well surprised reading those few lines dedicated to a man, at first sight more or less far from the subjects gathering us on those pages. Yes I’ve said at first sight…
At first sight yes, but not as much as that when reading between the lines and havin’ a look at his carreer and what he’s brought to the art of singing during no less that 75 years of activities. Yes I’m speaking of Henri Salvador, born in French Guyana from a Spanish father and an Amerindian mother, who’s passed a few days ago. A man who, from his early days alongside Ray Ventura & Ses Collégiens to his ultimate live concert in Paris a few weeks ago, leaves a countless heritage in the maturation of the contemporary song.
A song which happens to be good remains good for eternity, he used to say, reminding of what the late Barry White stated in regards to this matter. Crooner in the vein of both Franck Sinatra and Nate King Cole (among his models), he, like Martin Gaye, took quickly high consideration of the importance of the microphone and the position to adopt in front of the latest in order to litterally stuck to the meaning of the lyrics. Regularly asked about this specific question, he explained: Singing is not a matter of vocal power. Singing is a bit like flirting with a woman. You’ve got to whisper around it and let the sound engineer do the rest. Singer but also musician (he was a guitarist), he would give his first chance to Michel Legrand, later reknown for havin’ written some of the biggest soundtracks in the cinema. But he would also heavily contribute to the introduction of jazz, African music (doin’ a cover version of the famous ‘Lion Sleeps Tonight’ written by Solomon Linda in 1939), not to mention Brazilian music, heavily displayed on his repertoire. It is rumored that Carlos Jobim said he’d been for much in the appearence of bossa nova back in the days. Also, let’s not forget about his interpretation of the incredible ‘Syracuse’ written by Bernard Dimey and later on covered by Pink Martini. For all of this and far more, thank you Sir. MFSB

YES WE CAN…
History (as life) goes under a unceasing flow of cycles, this makin’ it worth the livin’ I suppose as long as jumpin’ on the right wagon and takin ’the right opportunities when bein’ offered doin’ so… Yes We Can is not only US Senator Barack Obama’s made famous campaign thema for the U.S. Presidential elections, but more likely a universal message sounding like a blattant reminder to our whole community as what remains to be done for a greater recognition…
Yes We Can… But do we really want??? Course, I guess none of us would answer he/she doesn’t, but wassup as far as acting is concerned??? More oftenly not much more than instant and short term reactions as opposed to slowly but surely constructed, not to say concerted actions from a big majority of us. With, as a direct result, a daily fight againt struggle for our already fragilized structures when not purely and simply their disapperance…
Could this be that I’ve gone myself under pessimism? Nope, otherwise I guess that I pretty much would have put a definitive end to our activism here on IDMW for quite some time already and therefore spared a consequent amount of money.
Yes we can… find a way to get rid off the numerous diseases our community has been suffering for too long while redefining the way we all work from our different perspectives as the one we use the communication tools and techniques currently at our disposal. This requiring more proximity between all of us which would facilitate the essential circulation of the information and its spreading to a wider audience, as opposed to keep on workin’ most likely on our sole owns.
Yes we can… But do we for f*** sake really want??? MFSB

IMAGES OF OUR HOUSE…
What’s the purpose of every supposedly reputed media if not to regularly point its fingers on what’s perceived as doin’ both good and bad? And God knows how there are so many things to be said about the situation our whole community is fronting on an everyday basis…
Images of our house… A thema – among the most popular, judging by the hudge amount of those who’ve read our previous editorials of the name in the past – which remains more than ever up to date by the time we speak! As if, taken by some ultimate reflex of survey by all means necessary, most of us had in the mean time forgotten about the essential basis of the running of a venture in our ultra modernized world, and I’m not even speakin’ of its achievement…
Once again comes the same question to mind: Who from the hen and the egg has appeared first??? In other words, is it because media coverage has drastically decreased along the years that PR actions have almost been reduced to zero apart from a handful of professionals, or is it the opposite??? Besides, the result remains the same, with the rare reputedly prescriptors in the middle of an unceasing fight to be provided with the right info at the right time…
Yup, quite ironical nowadays sein’ many people obviously unaware of when not denyin’ the existence of information pools, although bein’ offered always more performant communication tools!!! This resulting in the decrease of a global audience progressively reduced to a handful of DJ’s and their respective fan bases, exactly as opposed to what’s cruelly missing: a mass phenomenon!!!
Need a few illustrations? Okay, let’s go!
- What’s the interest in havin’ DJ’s playin’ all nite long music – unreleased cuts or remixes, advance copies, promos, etc.) that people won’t even be able to find/buy in the next couple of weeks or so, apart from the DJ himself satisfyin’ his own ego while doin’ the do with stuff that no one will be able to play at the same time??? Would it be to say that a DJ X or Y has a bigger sale potential during a set, than a review seen by thousands of people in a week on a dedicated website??? And the same to apply at events such as the WMC, with DJ’s speakin’ to DJ’s meanwhile neglecting the press!!!
- What’s the use of seing labels droppin’ said promos on downloading platforms before they’re even made available – whenever they are!!! - for the rare remaining reputedly specialised media???
- Is it to say that, although livin’ pretty much in a DIY environment for quite some time, anyone can pretend bein’ both at the same time a producer, a promoter, an advertiser, a prescriptor???
I let you all judges as far as those questions are concerned. This said, let’s not be surprised seing our environment collapsing from a year to another with such methods currently applied, seeming more of some amateur thing when so much professionalism remains cruelly needed, explaining why a few producers and structures have made themselves a name when so many remain so desperately in the shadow. DOUBLE OR QUIT…
We all regularly get thru those periods whereas questions come to mind, when not doubts and I guess those among you dealin’ with business should aptly understand what I’m sayin’. And even more in this period of unceasing changes seing what’s reputedly up to date at a precise moment already out the instant after. Starting from this, it is to say how the goal to maintain alive a venture like ours may seem sort of utopic under certain aspects…
Who from the hen and the egg appeared first ??? Here’s more or less the question those like us, in charge of transmitting an info not always easy to get as it wasn’t enough, gotta find the appropriate answer…
Should the technology nowadays brought to our disposals has allowed us to both broaden our reception area and have our reactivity increased in terms of treatment of the information, it is clearly impossible to make abstraction of the drastic change of the economical context, goin’ from the said paper format which would get its finances from the publication sales, the subscriptions and the advertising campaigns, to the whole digital whereas everything’s obviously for free as far as we’ re concerned.
These are those moments when we have to clearly come with the question that tickles our minds… In other words, by which means financing our activities, from the hosting of our resource to the inevitable fees resulting of the necessary transportation we have to use in order to get the info, not to mention payin’ those who spend time to cover it in addition to the investment into the necessary programs to put it into form.
As many interrogations which, in the state of current deregulation of our economy, remain without precise response to date, putting us in the obligation to be careful in the wait – let’s hope – of better days.
Be assured of havin’ us workin’ on it seriously, establishing new partnerships such as the launch of this fortnightly column alongside Traxsource and with the support of Spiritofhouse.com. But also those reports and interviews in coproduction with Djontv.com. As for what concerns you, labels managers, promoters, etc bein’ at the source of the information, you’re kindly requested updatin’ us in the best possible conditions. As for you, our readers, the best contribution you can bring us is to keep on visiting our pages but also use your turn to spread the word to those you know, so that you help us increasing our audience and subsequently our impact… Thank you in advance,

In Da Mix: IN LOVING MEMORY - MEL CHEREN (01/21/1933 - 12/07/2007)
|
Dear All,
This January 21st is a special date to me as it marks the Birthday of someone who not only stood as a model, but first and foremost never missed an opportunity to bless me with his love & care.
In a period when Humanity’s never looked so divided with more and more of us jumpin’ onindividualism, selfishness and untolerance in regards to our alter egos for the reason that they look different, the legacy of Mel Cheren stands more than never as a serious if not the antidote against our diseases, beginning with the growing threat of so called Big Brother…
How many contributions such as ‘Love Each Other’, ‘Stand Up For Your Rights’, ‘Fight The Power’ and the list is almost endless has each of us taken as prophecies??? But speakin’ is a thing and actin’ is a far different one…
No doubt how a huge amount of us loved Mel, but that’s just coz’ he’s never missed the opportunity to himself act in the name of love… You give, you receive and vice versa said to me one day one of my ol’ brothas named A Guy Called Gerald.
‘Stronger Together’ also sung Shannon nearly 20 years ago!!!
As many themas which should need as serious thinkin’ at, dontcha feel?
Time to make it right, make it happen…
Thereafter, our humble tribute to our beloved brother with a very special thought to Peter Reyes who’s introduced us to each other…
I love you, Mel.

Gene Graham, Director of The Godfather of Disco adds his voice to ours on this special day...
GODFATHER'S NYC MEMORIAL SERVICE
Normally I'd put this up on the Godfather website, but there's been a hard drive failure and it's gonna take a moment to re constitute the sight.
Thereafter (*) a nice recap of Mel's memorial, which took place Thursday, January 17th at St. Peter's Church in NYC. It's the same church that held Larry Levan's memorial. It was packed, standing room only. And as much as I know who Mel was, listening to so many people talk of what he did and what he's left behind, I was awed by his service and reminded why I wanted to do a documentary about this guy in the first place. I'm glad I was there…
Regarding the documentary, broadcast & dvd distribution has been on hold while we worked on clearance issues. Of course Mel's passing was another curve….
On a positive note, the documentary continues to screen at festivals around the world. For our friends in Europe Godfather will screen throughout Sweden via the Music Doc Festival (panora.nu, musicdoc.se) Feb. 15 - March 9, followed by a run at Tempo Documentary Festival in Stockholm (tempofestival.nu), March 5th - 9th as well as a screening at the Danish Film Institute in Copenhagen, Denmark, (dfi.dk/cinemateket/Cinemateket.htm), sometime in March.
Also, Godfather returns to the UK in late March, early April with a run at the London Lesbian & Gay Film Festival (llgff.org.uk). The Godfather of Disco has screened at over 25 film festivals throughout the world and I receive requests for screenings quite often. People continue to find the documentary educational, inspiring, emotional, and entertaining. I am very proud of the response this movie continues to receive. Please check it out when it screens in your area. And as soon as we are able to get it out on dvd, you will know about it immediately.
In keeping with Mel's wishes and all that he's fought for over a long and well-lived life, any donations on his behalf can be made to the following organizations:
The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center / gaycenter.org
Happy New Year and live life to the fullest!

(*) REMEMBERING MEL CHEREN, THE 'GODFATHER OF DISCO'
Posted by Julie Bolcer (Village Voice) at 5:00 PM, January 18, 2008
Mel Cheren, the founder of the Paradise Garage and West End Records, died on Dec. 7.
Some call him the Godfather of Disco. Others refer to him as Uncle Mel. Whichever name is used, both capture the familial feeling ascribed to Mel Cheren, the pioneer who made fundamental contributions to disco music and culture, and nurtured its extended community. On Thursday evening, nearly 250 family members, friends and colleagues filled St. Peter’s Church on Lexington Avenue and 59th Street for a memorial service to celebrate Cheren, who died on December 7 from pneumonia as a complication of AIDS. He would have turned 75 this Monday.
Personal recollections in addition to stirring vocal performances by Taana Gardner, Marty Thomas and Dawn Tallman delivered a portrait of Cheren, whom his attorney Sherri Eisenpress succinctly compared to a cannoli.
Her analogy captured his hard exterior bursting with business acumen, and sweetened on the inside by abundant generosity and passion expressed through music, and even painting. His canvases, produced without a brush, look like the squares of Mark Rothko, his muse, with fingerprint traces.
He was somebody who had the remarkable gift of being able to create family in so many different worlds, said Mark Cheren, across the altar from a life-size photo of his cousin. Beneath it, two urns containing the ashes of Mel and Larry Levan, the legendary Paradise Garage DJ, rested on a table draped with a rainbow flag and flanked by a glittering disco ball.
According to writer Brent Nicholson Earle, who hosted the service, Mel kept the cremains of Levan after he passed away in 1992.
A native of Massachusetts, Cheren co-founded West End Records with Ed Kushins in 1976, almost two decades into a career that generated the groundbreaking concepts of the 12-inch vinyl format and the instrumental B-side.
West End quickly became a home for influential R&B dance music, beginning with its first single, “Sessomatto.” According to Cheren in “The Godfather of Disco,” a 2007 biographical film by Gene Graham, hip-hop patriarch Grandmaster Flash cited “Sessomatto” as an influence on burgeoning uptown rappers before the dawn of the Sugarhill Gang.
As West End progressed through the late 70s and early 80s, the label delivered smashes such as Karen Young’s “Hot Shot,” the New York Citi Peech Boys’ “Don’t Make Me Wait,” which included Larry Levan, and Taana Gardner’s “Heartbeat,” one of the most sampled tracks in music history.
I closed my eyes when I went in to record it, Gardner recalled on Thursday about the song that achieved extraordinary sales in 1980. Everyone looked like they were hanging from the ceiling, she said, and I knew it must have been something good.
During the memorial service, Gardner performed “Cry Of The Brokenhearted,” a soulful ode to friendship she wrote for Cheren, whom she applauded for his honesty. West End producer Kenton Nix, who also attended the service, introduced them to each other when she was 17.
Although hailed by music executive Daniel Glass for his authenticity as a “record man,” the savvy Cheren possessed the means to provide his former lover, Michael Brody, with financial backing for the Paradise Garage in 1977.
Housed in a parking garage at 84 King Street in SoHo, the legendary club installed Larry Levan and other DJ’s as the center of attention, where they reigned over a powerful sound system— perhaps, the best in the history of the city.
Until its demise in 1987, the venue defied boundaries of race, class and even aesthetic to unite patrons in sonic ecstasy.
Sherri Eisenpress explained the allure of the Paradise Garage for those who missed the heyday: It was the only place around where no matter who you were, people came together in the shared spirit of love and music that, when you heard it, you had no choice but to get up and dance.
DJ Jeannie Hopper, host of the WBAI-FM program Liquid Sound Lounge, which her friend Cheren generously supported, adds with a sense of mourning: These events were places where people could come together in a social context. Through people coming together, all the isms disappear. Others insist that the experience cannot be adequately relayed in words. If you weren’t there, you wouldn’t know, remarked one Paradise Garage devotee at a reception following the memorial service. It would reverberate from your head to your dome, he insisted, as he flashed a tattoo of the venue on his arm.
The reception was held on West 22nd Street in Chelsea at the Colonial House Inn, where Cheren lived and for 20 years operated a gay bed and breakfast now run by his cousin, Illya Dekhtyar. In the early years of the AIDS epidemic, from 1980-84, he offered the space to the non-profit organization, Gay Men’s Health Crisis. Along with his founding of the AIDS charity, 24 Hours for Life, the gesture was one of many significant steps to
fight a disease that he ironically contracted in the later years of his life.
However, as someone who reportedly relished the phrase, Nothing happens by accident, Cheren in his final days transformed the irony into an opportunity to educate people about the need to remain vigilant against AIDS. Like his impact on music and culture, his contributions to activism are immortal, if unquantifiable.
Richard Burns, executive director of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Community Center, recounted his final meeting with Cheren at Cabrini Hospice the day before he died. Standing there with Mel, he said, it was so easy to tell him about the difference he made on earth…

In Da Mix: R.I.P. RON MURPHY - THE MAN, THE LEGEND... by AARON-CARL
|
R.I.P. RON MURPHY - THE MAN, THE LEGEND...
Motor City singer Aaron-Carl pays a vibrant tribute to the late Ron Murphy, a man who’ll remain in the history of the contemporary music for havin’ been responsible of the cutting and the mastering of some of Detroit techno’s biggest classics...
01/13/2008: I received the news this morning… Ron Murphy, the man, the legend, has died of a heart attack. While I'm filled with emotions right now, I must say that by the time I’m writing those lines, I don't feel "traditionally" sad. I'll miss him. …a LOT! You see, I knew Ron for a very long time. Even before I signed to Soul City… Ron mastered ALL of my records and CD’s – and with each project, he'd give me a lesson in music mastering. I remember my goal was to finally make a record that Ron Murphy didn't have to tweak or touch… An eager student, I finally achieved that goal – and he was proud. He LOVED my songwriting and vocal skills. He believed in my music a great deal. He told me that the ONLY thing that was holding me back from being a bona fide superstar, was the fact that I was limiting myself (by singing songs like "Uncloseted," etc...). Ron wanted to produce me himself for a project – we jokingly called it "Trick or Treat." Every time I saw him, he asked me "are you ready to trick or treat?" I'd laugh, but he was serious!
I'll miss our conversations…He'd confide in me about everything – from his health, to the state of Detroit's music. He owned the masters to recordings by my mother's first husband, Joseph Ragland (who is not my father, although we share a last name)… I forget the name of Joe's group, but I'll always remember the song. "I Just Can't Forget Your Name." Ron would play it nearly every time I visited! He would always refer to Joe as my father – I didn't bother to correct him anymore. His image of me following in my "dad's" footsteps made him proud. After I realized that, I decided I couldn't take that away from him.
Now, everyone who knew Ron knew what he was going through. I used to watch him in awe… I'd wonder, how the hell could a man suffer like this and still master some SUPER HOT RECORDS??? You could see it in his eyes. Mastering records was his passion. And watching him MASTER these records was MY passion.
On occasion I would call him, just to see how he was doing. We'd talk for a little while and catch up. I often wondered if that would be our last conversation, but miraculously every time I called him, he was there. Now God has called him home.
Although I cry, I will continue on, using the many lessons that Ron taught me over the years. I will continue to make him proud of me. And maybe one day, I will record that "Trick or Treat," just for him.
Ron Murphy, you know I looked up to you like a father and a teacher. I will miss you here on Earth, but I know that you are now in Heaven. Please watch over Detroit. We'll never be the same without you...
Love Always, Aaron-Carl

THE MARCH IS ON…
2008 has just begun and, despite havin’ followed a light publication schedule on those pages over the last few days, we’ve been busy as never workin’ on the reinforcement of our position, while putting the final touch to various projects we had on our shelves for quite some time, networking here and there and goin’ further on the definition of our most awaited 2.0 version. Not to mention keepin’ an ear to a fluck of new vibes we’ve been provided with recently, speakin’ of which we’ll give you further development next week. No doubt how the march is definitely on, if it has ever stopped one day since we’re here…
Confirmed and promising talents (as usual) awaited to deliver their views on these pages in the comin’ weeks in addition to big headz speakin’ of which we prefer keepin’ the identity for ourselves at the mo’ in order to maintain the effect of surprise alive… But also, on a format which is quite unusual for me, the launch of a new series of short live footages titled… MFSB Vs. in conjunction with djontv.com where are to be taken on a regular basis the comments of Franck Roger’s The 5 Beats guests at Paris Djoon beginning with Karizma who was in the house yesterday night. This meaning that the next on the list will be none other than Kevin Hedge of the Blaze fame!!!
Last but not least, quite some change on the editorial front awaited no later than next Wednesday with the mutation of our INDAMIX column. Not only in terms of concept with the notorious inclusion of sneak previews of new material awaited for official release, to be made exclusively available on our MySpace page under the form of audio snippets. But also as far as its own heading is concerned. Yes folks, the day has finally come to have our eponym column reachin’ some wider audience with its embedding on traxsource.com and, as a direct consequence, the change of its name into TraxsourceINDAMIX which we welcome as an honour and the materialization of a mark of long time support and mutual friendhip. No need to say how more than ever those willin’ to have some space on our column are kindly suggested to send us their material in time. A process the details of which are to be given on the first installment of our newly named column on Wed. 01/15.
But nuff spoken, time to make ourselves ready to get back to our usual publication schedule with a special thought for Kickin’ Records Peter Harris who sadly passed on 01/09/2008 after a long battle against sickness (R.I.P.)...

|
BREAK… FOR WORK! Years are definitely not the same from one to another and I guess there’s nothing to complain about it. Some of you might have thought that we’d gone for some break while comin’ here. But eurgh, not at all… Just spent the last few daze working on our our MySpace page, from networking with new peeps and ol’friends to trying to have it the most friendly and accessible as possible… As for what concerns you here on IDMW, we’re makin’ ourselves ready to get back with a whole bunch of new subjects to be posted in the comin’ weeks, as music never stops, which is rather exciting for those in search of fresh sounds and new grooves…
This period of the year is traditionally the one of the supposedly good resolutions. Our main one being to take our content to a new level, this meaning the total redesign of our site, both internally and externally speaking, which should take a few weeks and be synonymous with a couple of serious headaches in perspective. In the meantime, we’ll work on adding extra topics on this ol’ machine which has brought to where we are nowadays. So dontcha ever be surprised if you see here or there signs of experiments on these pages. And, as if it wasn’t enuff, we’ll get back to live footages following the footsteps of that very first interview we did with The Martinez Brothers in conjunction with djontv.com, no later than this month. Their feedback to be discovered on our MySpace page !
Nuff said, back 2 work and many thanks to those who either have left or sent us a comment. This is our fuel to go always further on our will to improve our service.
Peace y’all & (once again) Happy New Year everybody!

BREAK… 4 MORE!
Time has endly come to think about closing the accounts before steppin’ into 2008 with the same question resurfacing in regards to the year comin’ to an end by the time we drop those lines : Was it all it was? Well, frankly speakin’ and despite the ups & downs we’ve recently gone thru as far as IDMW is concerned takin’ us away from the forefront for some time, I’d be fairly well tempted to suggest the countless media programmers, editors and record companies execs to have a quick listen to our 2007 selection thereafter. This might well be the opportunity for them to rethink about the whole and have the actors – and I mean the real ones!!! – of the so called dance scene being given the recognition they deserve as opposed to the unceasing flock of crap we’re offered on an everyday basis…
One will never point enough how if ever one spectrum shows up creativity, it’s the dance scene, twistin’ the groove as if there was no limit for more than 3 decades now and eventually displayin’ an unequalled versatility. From old school renditions to the extremities of avant-gardisme, from live expressions to digitalism, from heartfelt message deliveries to total abstract, from festive vibes to darker moods and the list goes on. With the melting of influences inherited from jazz, blues, gospel, Afro, Latin, soul, funk, disco, hi-energy, R&B, hip hop, electronic, not to mention rock or classic on occasions… Covering, as a direct result, any kind of mood one can ever think of!!!
First as an observer for nearly… 35 years now – Yes, I know… Many are those who’ve retired inbetween!!! – then eventually an actor within the scene, I’ve never ceased keepin’ an eye if not both, not to say a cautious ear on the successive mutations which have accompanied the maturation of the contemporary groove with my interest remaining the same as day 1. And I don’t see myself being caught up by anything else as long as there’ll be someone with the ability to touch my mind, body and soul in the community. In other words and as some of you may have understood, everything will be done on our own side here on IDMW to have THE resource in regards to the talent of those blessing us with their works, including the total redesign of our site, which will be our biggest challenge so far in the coming months.
From all of us here on IDMW, Happy New Year!

BREAK… 4 LOVE!
At last, here we go once more, with a big majority of us on both sides of the oceans, ready to put aside the countless troubles of the world, being given the opportunity to spend some time and share love with their families and close friends for the festive period. And that’s exactly what we’re up to do with you in the coming days here on IDMW…
You give… you receive, said to me one day A Guy Called Gerald. And what a better gift could be made to us than have you payin’ us regular visits, droppin’ infos about your activities and sendin’ us your new releases to keep our whole community informed! Meanwhile, as a reverse, you can be assured of havin’ us doin’ our very best to make our space the most relevant in terms of content with the definitive will to have 2008 becoming a pivotal year for our entreprise. But nuff said for the moment, as what makes the magic of a gift is not only its nature but first and foremost the fact that it’s been worth the wait. And it’s what we’re currently workin’ on day after day…
On behalf of the whole IDMW team members, I’d like to wish you all a Merry X-mas.

(LET’S) KEEP HOPE ALIVE!
Unless back from a desert island, most of you here should know about our sadness since the passing of Mel Cheren a week ago, by the time we’re posting those lines. Mel was not only an active member of our community. He was its (god)father, putting in application day after day the principles of love, share, tolerance and mind opening reknown as its foundations. Nuttin’ apart from the disease which would finally have the final word could divert him from his desire of a better world and, more than ever, our responsability as his spiritual heirs is to keep his legacy alive and transmit it to the following generations…
Keep Hope Alive… Quite a challenge, as some of you might think, although what we simply have to do is to take for ourselves what he’s taught us along the years. In other words, have faith into who we are and what we do, care about our reputed brothers & sisters within the community and open our hearts and minds to those willing to become a part of it. This meaning a bigger circulation of informations and ideas, the expanding of the interactivity from one to another, if not the joining of our forces on occasions to spread the word.
Keep Hope Alive… That’s what those we’re talkin’ about on those pages notoriously do, showing us how many things remain to be written while blowing our minds with a renewed emotion from a year to another, but also achieved, as far as we (the rare observers dedicated to this spectrum) are concerned for havin’ it recognized on a wider scale…
Keep Hope Alive… That’s we, here on IDMW, are workin’ on on our will to offer you the most complete information and even more services. The latest being the long awaited launch of our live footages in conjunction with the newly launched djontv.com platform. The first in the series being an interview with NYC uprising phenomenons The Martinez Brothers due to appear this Sat. Dec, 15th. Watch your screens! MFSB

In Da Mix: MEL CHEREN (01/21/1933 - 12/07/2007)
|

Melvin Cheren (January 21, 1933 – December 7, 2007)
Affectionately known as “The Godfather of Disco” for his championing of DJ’s, dance music and club culture from the early days of the Disco Movement, Mel began his five decade career in the music business at ABC/Paramount, where he eventually became Head of Production. He held the same position when he moved to Scepter Records. During his tenure at Scepter he was responsible for many innovations such as the first 12 inch record for DJ’s and the first instrumental mix on the B-side, earning Scepter the “Trendsetter of the Year” Award from Billboard in 1974. With a former Scepter colleague he formed his own company, West End Records in 1976, which has been associated for over 30 years with enduring dance classics like “Hot Shot” and “Heartbeat.” In recent years West End released popular compilation CD’s of remixes and live performances by legendary Paradise Garage DJ Larry Levan.
Mel was the financial backer of the landmark club created by his former life-partner Michael Brody. This history is well documented in Cheren’s autobiography, MY LIFE AND THE PARADISE GARAGE: KEEP ON DANCIN’ published in 2000 and in a recent documentary, THE GODFATHER OF DISCO. In 2005 Mel was inducted into the Dance Music Hall of Fame with their Lifetime Achievement Award, an honor which meant a great deal to him. For all of his accomplishments in the music industry, Mel was most proud of his work in support of various causes and charities and in particular his efforts in support of the LGBT Community and the fight against AIDS. He was part of the vanguard of gay men who first responded to the AIDS crisis in New York in the early Eighties and gave GMHC their first home in his Chelsea brownstone which he later operated for over 20 years as a successful bed-and-breakfast, the Colonial House Inn. He was the founder of 24 Hours For Life, an AIDS charity that was the fiscal sponsor for LIFEbeat, on whose Board he served as a Charter Director. Mel was also quietly a friend to many friends and strangers in need as well as an accomplished painter. A large number of Mel’s works of art memorialize friends lost to AIDS.
It is a sad irony that he is a fatality of the same health crisis that he fought so long to eradicate. Even in his last days he took a stand for AIDS prevention in a cautionary interview aired on the LOGO channel throughout the week of World AIDS Day. Mel Cheren is survived and will be greatly missed by many family members, prominent among them being Illya Dehktyar, Mark Cheren and Barry Cherin, as well as a large extended family of close friends, colleagues and fellow activists. An announcement will soon be made about a memorial service/celebration and various memorial benefit parties taking place over the third weekend in January which would have marked his 75th birthday. Donations in Mel’s honor can be made to GMHC, 119 West 24th Street , New York, New York 10011; The LGBT Community Center at 208 West 13th Street, New York, New York 10011; or LIFEbeat, 630 9th Avenue Suite 1010 New York, New York 10036.

In Da Mix: BACK’N'FORTH…
|
BACK’N'FORTH…
In this world where everything goes (too???) fast, we’ve nearly forgotten about this fundamental value known as time. This time so much needed to the maturation of a great wine (the connoisseurs should understand what I’m talkin’ about) as of talent, should the promoters and the manufacturers of the usual prefabricated sensations around dislike what I’m sayin’…
The late French choregraph Maurice Béjart said about the artistic expression that it is a much the result of the discipline it requires as of the interpretation freedom that the latest brings once liberated from the accomplished work. This explaining the impression of easiness one might feel in front of a (great) talent, but to which cost!!!
Both the artistic expression and the knowledge get their substance in the past to take place in the present, when not exploring the future such as the so called avant gardists whose visions may reveal themselves quite plausible along with time going refering to Leonardo Vinci and Jules Verne. But also to those authors such as Pierre Bouille (The Planet Of The Apes), Aldous Huxley (Brave New World) or George Miller (Mad Max), the impact of which residing in the ability which has been theirs to conceive a possible imaginary universe on the basis of certain observations.
Culture doesn’t impose itself, no more than knowledge without the existence of a researching work, quite essential in order to understand its architecture, such as any edifice around, from its foundations til its top. It is to say if, in regards to what gathers us on those pages, we still have nice years and numerous back & forth trips to come before any complete round is over… MFSB

In Da Mix: DEEPER... INDAMIX!

DEEPER… INDAMIX!
Rather take the positive side of the things! Those last weeks havin’ us disconnected to our long time net access provider - thanks to crétins dot fr (guess they’ll easily recognize themselves!!!) - have left time & space for some retrospective work as far as we’re concerned, meanwhile (re)discovering a whole bunch of more or less forgotten treasures from the past. This givin’ us both the will and the opportunity to go further while delivering what we hope to be a more extensive coverage of the groove as a whole and eventually bring you new perspectives…
In addition to this, we’re now on our way to get back to the said current affairs with the help of a new access provider. This meaning the pursuit of the ongoing transformation of our site, the reactivation of our usual publishing schedule and the arrival of new services, some of them in conjunction with www.djontv.com which is to be launched on 12/08/2007. Keep ya posted! MFSB

In Da Mix: BREAK THE RULES...
|
BREAK THE RULES…
Times change giving birth to new ways of consumption as well as new rules. Not to mention subsequent perceptions far different. I guess that’s the way life goes from a generation to another. Differently said, what we call evolution, although a lot might be said in regards to the latest, supposedly havin’ a positive meaning. 30 years have gone since the disco era, synonymous with eclectism as embodied by people such as Larry Levan, David Mancuso and Frankie Crocker who’ve customized the ears of their contemporaries with a vast array of diverse sounds as long as they obviously had a meaning. Those giving birth to a whole known as dance/club music which was then to be progressively fragmented into as many different niches…
What went wrong last night, could fairly well ask soul diva Millie Jackson. Or should I rather say, what went wrong over the last years? Nothing else but the famous process known as formatization which has had everyone focusing on one specific style/genre, from the media to the DJ’s, from the record companies (most likely the majors) to the producers. This resulting in the fragmentation of the crowd into as many different (micro) niches, eventually firmly opposed to each other. Quite ironical in regards to the idea iself of the mix, with the de facto exclusion of what’s reputedly not fitting on the said formats as a part of the ongoing binarisation process of our environment. With record sales and per extension an economy at a critically low level, no need to say how such a situation has shown its limits, putting us in the obligation to redefine the sense if not the nature of our actions and break the rules of a current system no one is happy with, to the exclusion of the technology manufacturers.
As some of you may have noticed, we’ve already started doin’ a part of our job while broadening our spectrum with the inclusion of a whole bunch of different vibes in addition to the current production. In other words, we’ve gone further… in the mix and it’s just the beginning. Breakin’ the rules, breakin’ the barrers! MFSB

In Da Mix: DIVIN' IN THE BEAT...
|
DIVIN’ IN THE BEAT…
Ask any of those blessed with musical skills around you if they would ever think about exchanging their lives for anything else and you’ll most likely get a clear response from them, being nuttin but a frank NO! And you know why? Coz’ music as opposed to the vast amount of prefabricated crap spreaded on the major media with the support of the major companies, is first and foremost the expression of an art, the display of a culture, as well as the reflect of instants being as many fragments of our collective history… This said, don’t ever think the said mass crowd doesn’t want to hear. It’s just that, for a whole bunch of reasons more or less questionable, it hasn’t been given for quite a long time the means to get into it the way it is as far as other types of infos are concerned…
It’s in the souvenir that things take their right position, used to say French author Jean Anouilh. Nevertheless, there’s no objective history, but rather more reports, personal testimonies, the addition of which gives it shape with as many different perspectives. It’s here that a medium like ours gets all its dimension while trying to reassemble the various elements of a puzzle, scattered not to say forgotten with time going. It is to say if, as far as we’re concerned, retrieving should it be one of them, via an interview or the presentation of some work then sharing it with you, is seen both as a victory and a priceless pleasure.
The slackening of our publication planning as a consequence of both the restructuration of our site and the deficience of our access provider which has put us in the obligation to take some distance in regards to an unceasing flow of current events has parallely allowed us to rethink a part of our content with the arrival of new columns and the progressive recast of the existing ones, with the hope to respond more and better to your expectations.
History doesn’t stop. Thank you for keeping on writing it with us.
