Oh
I know, some of you might think about some more complain from us while having a
look at this new subject, but this is not… How could we frankly say that
everything's cool in front of the things put to our attention here & there on an
everyday basis ? C'mon ! Is this really what you expect reading from supposed
observers ? No way, although many of the reputed press keeps on acting as if
nothing had changed. In fact, pointing out our fingers on this or that subject
the way we regularly do is nothing but the proof of our will to contribute to
find new paths for a better running of the system we're supposed to be a part
of. And as I'm sure you'll agree : how can a system even think about surviving
on its whole meanwhile having most of its components living for their sole egos
?
Isn't that that the system is killing itself ? I bet many of you have had that
question in mind one day or another as I'm pretty sure that any E.T. would
respond by the positive seing us acting the way we do on a worldwide scale. And
the same thing pretty much applies to our scene fragilizing it a bit more from a
day/week/month/year to another. And what is it that we individually do in order
to have such a situation changed ? Almost nothing, being stucked on our own
habits as if what's currently happening, although having us being partially the
progenerators of it, was a fate… Bullocks and I mean it ! It's really time for
each of us to start thinking as conscient individuals being aware that the only
way our scene can survive is having each of us paying our contribution to it
instead of trying to take advantages on it on the usual one way basis, the way
we do by extension regarding our planet.
Once again, we're given to receive and in return, we're supposed to give, the
way we normally expect from what we consider as being a normal relation. And
what do we have instead at some points ? People who have taken huge amounts of
money out of the scene without reinvesting a single dime on it. Then those
searching for free downloads, playing them at some place and making profit out
of them. And the list goes on…
Many labels have decided to reduce drastically the list of people they send
their promos to and I hardly see how we could blame them, as not only is this a
matter of expenses (thanks to the post by the way !!!), but also due to the weak
return they get out of this kind of procedure. As a matter of fact, I would like
to remind you what West End former CEO Mel Cheren used to say back in the
days. Each time we had Larry (Levan) at The Paradise Garage, he
had people asking him infos about the music he was playing. Then you would see
them doing their shopping at the record shop next door the day after…
Needless to say that we're far away from this situation nowadays. And I'm not
even talking about my reputed collegues working for the paper press, having to
agree with Louie Vega when he states that the aforementioned look like
being obsessed by the latest hype around. This making them useless promowise.
Once again, don't get me wrong as my intention is not to seem negative which I'm
trully not, but what we currently have to face is more than a circumstancial
crisis. It's a deep mutation if not a revolution with all what such a situation
carries in terms of questions, doubts and the absolute necessity for each of us
to give them the appropriate answers. The first one coming to my mind being : we
can't have our scene and eat it too !
