Right, we recently had a chat with Alix Alvarez and we now have
his partner in crime, both of them embodying the arrival of a new generation and
eventually fresh air on the house scene. This said, although they made quite
some noise together or separately, remaing firmly attached to their heritage,
what you're up to read therafter is quite illustrative of today's situation
where there's no space left anymore for improvisation. Say kids, what time is it
? It's time for Mr V…
Hey Victor.
Nice having you on board, wassup ?
Just trying
to stay alive.
If there was
one word to define you which one would it be ?
Unorthodox.
The image
you'd like to give of you ?
A sports
blazer…
You was born
in 1974 if I'm not doing a mistake which made you recently dive on your 30's.
How have you felt about it ?
I feel good.
My age tells me I ain't got much time to fool around.
I guess we
can say without hurting you that you're amongst the 2nd generation of say (between
the brackets) electronic music DJ's and the 3rd as far as club music is
concerned. What have you got from the elders ?
The same
traditions they have had. I'm not trying to change what was done, I'm simply
trying to modify it.
Have you got
the impression that you've achieved what you wanted so far ?
Nah. It only just begun for me,
I have a long long long way to go.
The
circumstances which have brought you into music ? Do you remember them exactly ?
I was raised
with all types of music, a lot of people have. My mom owned a social club. It
was a melting pot of music for me not to mention the kind of people that
frequented the club.
The
environment and the period have much changed since your early days. What does
come first out of your mind from the latest ?
Technology.
Just how easy it is to do things nowadays. It's almost scary.
Do you
sometimes feel like melancholic, if not nostalgic ?
Yeah I do, I
just try to stay focused though on what I need to do.
How have you
seen the evolution from this period to nowadays ? What would like to be kept
unchanged from this period ? And what appears as positive to you from what we're
currently living ?
I think this
period in the scene is cool. We have our mixture of music through simplicity and
it can be somewhat complexed with some of our veterans and up & coming producers.
On the other
side what appears to you as negative, thus making it in the need to be corrected
?
Just some of our so called
legends need to get their heads checked,.
Hopefully when I write a book I'll explain in
detail what I'm talking about.
Have you had
any models, heroes ?
My dad, my
wife, Alix Alvarez, MAW, Robbi, Frankie Feliciano, those that are in my
tightnipped circle.
You're
somehow perceived as Louie vega's spiritual son. Any comment ?
Wow spiritual
son, never heard that one before… It's cool. It lets me know I'm doing something
right when I'm compared to him. I owe him a lot you know. I'll do my best not to
let him down.
How have you
met ? What did you learn from him ? From kenny ? From the MAW organization on
its whole ?
I learned a lot, from Louie…
Both the buisness and the DJing ethics. I learned from MAW presentation as well
as, the etiquette of making great records.
Where do you
find your inspiration ?
Great
musicians, "live" musicians especially. When I see it done in front of me or
when I play some chords to a track and it sounds dope, it pushes me and lets me
know that I'm learning how to create, structure and lay down good music.
How is it to
work with someone else (Alix Alvarez as a matter of fact) ?
It's always a
great thing to try something or collaborate should I say with someone else, I
like to do that when it's just out the blue, you know, not knowing what you
wanna do.
Does it
somehow make the things easier ? If so to which extend ?
It does a
bit, but not much as no one holds my hand when I do my buisness so I'm still
learning. The best advice I got was from Kevin Hedge of Blaze. He told me to
always remember this is a buisness first before it is music and I truly
understand that to the fullest.
Who's doing
what ? Would you have like complementary backgrounds ?
We both
produce. When we get together to do something, either me or him play keys or do
the bassline, we can do both. I don't do solos though. I'm not there yet but
Alix can when he needs to. Our history together complements each other. You can
hear it when we do things together.
If so who are
you as compared to him and how do you see him as compared to you ?
I can't
compare me and Alix. We both go through different moods with our music.
What is your
type of relation, according to the fact that you're slightly older than him ?
We're
musically related. I like our friendship a lot. We have heated debates,
discussions, buisness decisions but at the end of the day we respect each other
very much and we look out for the best in both our interest.
What has
decided you to work with someone ? And with Alix more particularily ?
When I saw
Alix's hunger, that was it. It let me know I was'nt alone and I understood him
both as a friend and as a musician.
Have the
Masters At Work been sort of models as far as this subject is concerned ?
They're role
models to thousands of people, so yes.
How did you
meet ?
I met Louie
at the Underground Network in 94. I believe, I crossed Kenny's path right after
that through Louie.
Suppose not
doing music, where would you then be ?
In a
marketing agency. I love advertising.
Same Q as
Alix : suppose being left on a desert island with the choice of bringing only 3
thangz witcha. What would they be ?
A porn mag, a
knife and matches...
You near
future ?
Hopefully
$$$$$$$$$$$$
Miami of
course ?
Yes I will be
there and DJing for the only 2nd time too. For the info, I let you pay me a
visit (djmrv.com)
Your long
term projects ?
Making great music… Hopefully
classic records.
The question
that's never been asked to you to which you'd like to answer ?
Are you gay ?
No, I'm a lesbian (laughing).
