We put an end to
our series of Miami profiles with IDMW.Com editor MFSB
showing another side of his tonite at Flute prior going back home, with tons of
things to be featured on the site, an awaited new CD mix and a regular night
that he’s to give birth to in Paris some time in April. Keep ya posted…
Would you
mind having a few words as an introduction to where you’re coming from, who you
are and where you intend to go…
I’ve got into
the groove the very first time I came to a club in… 1974. I came to DJ quite
soon after and I never quitted (black influenced) music since, should it be
while spinning in front of people, radio broadcasting or reviewing for various
publications. My aim is to bring the emotions I feel to the maximum amount of
people and, amongst others, via this website which I’ve launched and run at my
own expenses.
Where to find
you and your current environment in terms of local scene/nightlife ?
Currently
living in the suburbs of Paris where nothing happens that much as far as the
music we love is concerned apart from a few exceptions. You may currently find
me most of the time behind my screen where I work on the development of this
site.
Your heroes ?
Barry White,
Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Roy Ayers, Larry Heard, Lil’ Louis, Soul II Soul,
Ten City but also those I currently relate the stories of as they contribute to
feed my appetite in terms of good vibes.
The ones you
feel the closest to…
They are
those who, by their influences, have contributed to make me who I am today… Jose
Padilla, DJ Pathaan, Joe Claussell, Ron Trent, Kerri Chandler, Jazzie B, Glenn
Underground, Tony Humphries, Paul Dailey (of Leftfield) and Danny Tenaglia.
The way you
work and your source of inspiration…
Everything is
based around the emotion that I feel…
Your
definition of a good piece of music.
As a non
musician, I would say that it’s more something of instinctual. A matter of
aural and physical transport. Something suggesting pictures…
Of a good
nite…
A moment of
share, from the mix of vibes, crowds and subsequently stories, cultures and
colours…
The way you’d
like to be looked at
A true people
devoted to what he’s accomplishing.
Your best/worst
souvenir
That
spontaneous six hand open air DJ set alongside Kerri (Chandler) and Dennis
(Ferrer) + 3 Cuban percussionnists and a sax player which we’ve put together at
Sunslice Festival in 2001. I wish we could do this one day in Miami. But also
those offerings of Mel Cheren – his book and a painting of his – which I have a
look at everyday. As for the worst, I prefer forgetting about it and have my
energy geared towards the positive thangz.
Your
perception of the current situation and the things which need to evolve.
We’re
currently in the middle of a deep mutation. What we need is communicate more
than ever with each other and gather our energies in order to keep our system
alive and (preferably) kickin’…
Your current
projects…
Providing the
whole scene with a true reference in terms of editorial and and an acurate tool
to increase the exposure of its activities. Currently working on the launch of a
regular nite in Paris with a couple of young DJ’s and on the way of releasing a
couple of new CD mixes.
The way you
see Miami and what you expect from it…
The
opportunity to meet the people I support the music of and share some good time
with them. I wish it could be the opportunity to communicate more with each
other, the way it was at the time by the Fontainebleau poolside, but it looks
like this time is definitely over…
Any secret
weapon of yours over there ?
I hope that
all the noise we’ve made this week on our site will be taken as a true sign of
our commitment into spreading what we think to be the good words for a better
understanding of what we love.
Your 3 all
time favourite songs…
Barry White
‘Girl, It’s True, Yes I Will Always Love You’, Chic ‘Happy Man’, Romanthony
‘Bring U Up’…
You can catch MFSB today as a
part of the Classic Session II party @ Flute
