No doubt, how that question’s been around for an eternity, not to say
the beginning of humanity. As no doubt neither, how bouring life would be, if we
already knew what’s gonna be next. This said, the way we’re going - or should I say
the system as individual parts of it – is quite illustrative of the situation
we’re currently living, with the obvious lack of true references…
No need to have
a Harvard School degree or to come out of Oxford University to feel the absence
of real thinkers and subsequently values that could be used as serious
references. I mean, just have a look at what’s going on on TV and the way
reputedly stars are created on an everyday basis should be enuff to have a
global idea of the way it works nowadays. No need to think, no need to know, no
need to work, no need to have talent as long as you accept the rules of the
current system to make them yours, having anybody able to be under the
spotlights from a day to another one. Sure, this could be cool to a certain extend,
but frankly speaking, what do we currently show to the upcoming generations ?
The exact contrary of the way it’s supposed to work.
When questionned
a few years ago about the ability to make music with the assistance of
technology, veteran producer, François K showed obvious signs of doubt, stating
that if technology was indeed something of a real help, it also allowed people
to show their faces and subsequently making money despite their lack of
knowledge of elementary principles as far as how making music was concerned. And
not only time but also the current facts tend to show how right he was.
I personaly tend
to think that this has a lot to do with the situation of many of those in charge
of producing music nowadays, working mostly on their own and, as a result, being
in the unability to develop their vocabulary, should we consider music as being
a language like English, French, Spanish or whatever. And that’s finally about
the same as far as the latest are concerned when having a look at the way we use
them when coming to exchange messages via pagers and the likes.
On such
conditions, there’s no surprise witnessing the poor quality of the music we’re
currently provided with on a global scale, having people sampling whatever they
can, when not doing cover versions (sometimes even without a single quote to
those who’ve made it first). As there’s no more surprise seing that most of this
production doesn’t sell. And that’s exactly the same in terms of clubbing where
you would hardly find something comparable to Body & Soul, not to mention the
Hacienda in Manchester, the Zanzibar, the Paradise Garage, etc… This leading us
back exactly to where we started with.
What do we
remain reactive to with the time ? To things with a signification. Where do we
tend to go ? To places with a meaning… MFSB
