Funny how levels on almost every aspects of life have gone to a
dramatical decrease along the past decades, having nearly no one as reputed
observer saying anything about it, but glorifying the successive trendz & hypes
which, ironically gotta find their food on things of the past. This said, if
such a situation keeps on being accepted on a global scale, the 2nd
hand records market shows how an impressive budget tends to be invested on an
every day basis on this niche. As if there was a real search for the genuine as
opposed to many of those cut’n’paste based thangz circulating at the moment.
C’mon, no need
to hail from a desert island or come out of the very depth of the Amazonian
forest to see how numerous hits around are either cover versions or widely based
on previous works with more or (most often) less acuracy. A fact quite revealing
of a situation which has been lasting for quite some time now, but what does
this mean ? Could it be that every thing has already been written, as some
people would tend to make us believe ? Or wouldn’t it simply be that those
aforementioned are in the unability to express themsleves otherwise than having
to cut’n’paste elements generated by the others ???
As a result,
re-creation seems to be the motto on a major part of the current production
seing it subsequently getting its subsides on others’ back. But in the meantime,
it incitate many people to increase their knowledge while discovering forgotten
treasures from the past which, in some occasions, never managed to make
significant noise at the time of their release… This said, don’t get us wrong,
taking what you read as a sign of nostalgia. Past is definitely behind and
there’s no possibility to re-face it by any means, should they even be necessary
at some point. As the point is neither to tell you that life was better or
easier at the time. But the thing is that there was no other way for people to
make music than handmaking it as opposed to today’s situation and eventually
develop the language while being surrounded by other musicians.
I’m not saying
neither that today’s music is nuttin’ but crap. I’d rather talk in terms of
sound which can’t be other than different as compared to yesteryear. And if
there’s something you can take for granted about the latest, it’s that whatever
is in your possession, today’s sound will on most cases never reach yesterday’s
standards, as there’ll never be anything like a vinyl to be played on a sound
system as opposed to mp3’s and even CD’s !!! And the same oughtta be said about
almost anything when making the difference between the original and the
inevitable reproductions trying to recapture its essence, even though there’s a
part of inevitable subjectivity (fetichism ?) as far as this domain is
concerned. At least, if one thing’s for sure, it’s that all those actions
preceeded by the prefix ‘RE’ will never reach the status of the original, simply
because activated by different people in another period time.
Sure, who
amongst us has never been happy ending up catching some hard to find tune on a
bootleg or a ‘RE’press, eventually on a CDR or an mp3, but what are those at the
end of the day in comparizon to an original pressing, not to mention a promo
copy !!! That’s about the same as far as art and all the things that come along
are concerned, should it be architecture, decoration, litterature or whatever
(wines !!!) as nothing can replace the inevitable traces of time going.
Okay, this has a
cost but what’s better at the end of the day ? Having one thing the value of
which is to increase along the years or get yourselves 10 of the pieces of wax
currently around which, for most of’em, are to be forgotten with the arrival of
the following trend ? It’s up to you. As for my own concern, there’s nothing
like authentic. MFSB
