So strange to see how many people can be arrogant to each other, as far
as music is concerned and more ironically regarding a spectrum – the so called
garage – the main goal of which, judging by the lyrics it vehiculates, is to
gather human beings. A sign of passion somehow but, above everything, a sign of
frustration that finds its explanation on many reasons…
Does the emotion we’re up to feel deserve so
many efforts to get its source ? In other words, aren’t some of us tired of
investing so much time (money) on things which, to many, are harder to find from
a year to another. A fact which not only applies to those treasures of the past
the souvenir of which has been revived via those numerous proceedings such as
sampling, reedtiting, remixing and cover versions, but also the current
production the promotion of which has become nearly unexisting. Not to mention
its distribution, under a drastic rarefaction.
Are we still ready/tempted to pay often quite
a huge amount of money, when today’s technology allows each of us to have more
and more things… for free ? I’d be very much tempted to say yes for a certain
category of us as opposed to a generation and no for many of us who haven’t
grown up surrounded by a certain form of culture, as explained months ago on
these pages by Kenny Dope. As a matter of fact, I’d like to add that him
and his long time partner – Louie Vega – had been for much in revamping
those timeless vibes from the past via their compilations and the awesome
speculation that has followed on certain tracks that we, on this other side of
the Pond, have not even heard of at the time of their release ! This applying to
songs like ‘Draggin’ My Heels’, ‘Dis Go Dis Way’ or even ‘Street Player’ being
the works of pop bands The Hollies, Mother’s Finest or Chicago,
but also more oriented disco tunes reaching astonishing prices when related to
the late Larry Levan, Patrick Adams, Leroy Burgess, Tom
Moulton and the likes, not to say DJ Harvey for most recent ones…
Is it worth to get the music
whatever its format may be ? I’d also be tempted to say yes and no. Yes as
there’s nothing wrong in the principle of trying to get what we like. And no,
should you be a true collector as nothing can replace the original in terms of
history and value as opposed to all those reedits, covers and bootlegs around,
not to mention (for the latest) that their producers make money out of them on
their creators. You may see people telling you that they won’t give a sh.. as
long as they get the material but although I may somehow understand, this looks
to me like nothing but a selfish reaction the consequence of which is the
weakening of an already fragilised system.
But who cares at the end of the day, judging
by the so many illegal stuff that the improvement of the technology has allowed
to do along the years !
What WE gotta understand is that there is A
price to pay for everything as it’s the reputed basis of what is called ECONOMY
having persons related to each other on the principle of monetary exchange from
one to another and vice versa. And what we gotta be clearly aware of is that
avoiding spending money by any means necessary causes nothing but the death of
the whole system.
Whose house is this ? The one of those trully
supporting it as opposed to the one of those spending their time doing blah blah
blah and nothing else for the reputed sake of it… MFSB
