Once again, House Music is to take the center stage this week here on IDMW.Com, hot on the heels of the recent Miami gathering and what has occured over there, as reported by our correspondants, letting us wondering even more about the future of the genre…
No doubt will the answer depend on who is to be considered as being a part of it or not which will vary in regards to what is perceived as being House Music or not… Better say that we’re once again confronted to that famous question as to what between the egg and the hen has appeared first! But also in the position to be taken as some self proclaimed guardians of the temple, which we do not pretend to be, no more than censors while givin’ good points to some and bad ones to others…
This said, you’ll probably agree with us when being said how today’s situation has become confused as far as house music is concerned, in the true vein of what happened to the said dance music some fifteen years ago with the progressive rejection of the phenomena as such due to the numerous deviations which have followed. The first of’em being the arrival of the so called Eurodance with the consequences that we all know…
We’re not that far away from it nowadays, as shown by the Miami festivities which, after being for a long time the exclusive home of house music, have progressively opened themselves to the different expression forms of the said electronic conceived music, while not only tryin’ to get more attention but first of all x-tra profits.
C’mon, there’s no need havin’ a Harward diploma to realize how House Music has changed since its early daze! But let’s not forget how much we’ve also changed ourselves in the meantime. Should it be in regards to our respective ages, but also our situations and expectations. And I’m not even talking about those 20 years which have passed since with, as a direct result, the arrival of successive new generations.
A quick look at the said specialized press and most notoriously their regular DJ polls is quite illustrative of the growing gap between the crowd as a whole.
This said, what happens to House Music is far from being an exception, as demonstrated by the countless disco facets back in the days, not to mention the hip hop numerous overflowings such as XXX rated stuff by the likes of 2 Live Crew or the gangsta thang, and R&B and even rock make no exception.
As a conclusion, what can obviously be said is the coexistence of two parellel although totally different universes which while living under the same banner are for much in the current confusion as far as the genre as a whole is perceived. With, on one hand, those inclined to fill the expectations of a said massive market with the consequences that such a situation suggests (absence of message when not meaning, pop references by any means necessary and the release of reputed instant consumption products). While, on the other are to be found the others, considering music as a language whereas they’ll try to express what they feel, leavin’us with the entire freedom to share it ; this, as strange as it seems, being much closer to the definition generally given as far as art is concerned.
