Picks of the Week

Miami Aftermath: FSB featuring DIANE CARTER "Dr. Feelgood" (MoreHouse/CD Promo)
"Dr. Feelgood" by FSB (Funky Soul Bros) was one of those secret weapons in Miami this year that took the crowd in storm anytime it got played . The Groove Junkies take us on an irresistible journey into soulful funked-up house grooves that are created by chunky beats and a heavy bassline that get enriched with a killer piano line, wicked organ solo and great strings. And then there is the incredible vocal performance by Diane Carter that is full of emotion and passion, not to forget to mention the sexy spoken word message by the Doctor himself that is absolutely resistless and certain to drive the ladies crazy. With vocal, dub and acapella mixes included in the package, this soulful'n'funky bomb is not to be missed.

More Reviews

LOOSEFINGERS "What Is House" / "Dreaming Of Better Days" (Alleviated)
This 12" features extended versions of two tracks from Larry Heard's Soundtrack Form The Duality Double-Play album that was released last summer. First up is "What Is House", a simple percussion driven track that features a wicked aced line and deep spoken words. The real delight on this 12" is the ten minute version of "Dreaming Of Better Days", a sensual deep house production featuring soulful vocals and wonderful jazzy saxophone over a smooth and laidback groove.

Miami Aftermath: ToT "String Thang" (CD-R)
ToT aka 'The Other Timmy' presented this lovely track at this year’s music Conferences. It is a smooth and laidback track that features sweet percussion and drums that are enriched with wonderful strings and a great piano line.

ERIC DANIEL & FRIENDS "Old Sax, Nu Soul" - Bocsecrets Remix (Quarto Miglio/CD Promo)
Eric Daniel has been playing saxaphone for a wide variety of artists in the past. Now he is ready to release his first solo album that features a lot of his friends and will be orientated towards nu soul grooves. The track "Old Sax, Nu Soul" has been reworked by Maurizio Baiocchi (aka Bocsecrets) into a deeply groovin' affair that features sweet percussion alongside warm melodic keys, sultry female vocals, a wicked guitar and the magnificent saxophone play by Eric Daniel.

BYRON MOORE "Life Starts Today" (Tea Party Music)
Ian Friday launches his own label with this wonderful release that is co-written by Mert Oglivie and features singer Byron Moore. "Life Starts Today" is an organic blend of Afro and Latin flavors in its original version that is spreading a mellow and laidback vibe, featuring a passionate vocal performance. The 'Tea Party Vocal' is based around a driving groove that continues the Afro-Caribbean sound Ian Friday developed with "Carib's Leap", keeping the laidback vibe alive.

FAITH EVANS "Come Over 2006" - Original Drum Remix (CD-R)
RAHEEM DEVAUGHN "Believe " Original Drum Remix (CD-R)
King Supreme serves us more of his magnificent reworkings of R&B gems. "Come Over" by Faith Evans was originally relased in 1995 and gets a new life as a soulful garage interpretation that features a wonderful piano line and melodic keys over a deep and smooth groove. "Believe" is lifted from Raheem DeVaughn's 2005 The Love Experience long player and comes here is a fierce interpretation that features stellar keys and wonderful organ ride over a funkily stormin' groove.

AVANT "4 Minutes" - DFA Remix (FallOut)
The notorious remix duo DFA aka Darryl James & Fred McFarlane go for another one of their garage reworking of a R&B production. This time, they rework "4 Minutes" by Avant into a bumpin' take that features lovely harmonies created by melodic chords, letting Avant's sweet voice underline the soulful feeling.

KEM "Set You Free" / FEMI KUTI "Traitors Of Africa" (Restricted Access)
Timmy Regisford and Scott Wozniak team up for a lovely rendition of Kem's "Set You Free" that comes on a soulful tip, using thumpin' beats as base for the wonderful keys and jazz flute solo that create an uplifting feeling. The flip side features a beats version of the previously released Quentin Harris remix of "Traitors Ff Africa" by Femi Kuti.

MOSES McLEAN featuring DIAMOND TEMPLE "Always" (Soul Groove)
Produced by Moses McLean (aka Mitch Moses & Vince McLean,) "Always" is a soulful production featuring a wonderful passionate vocal performance by Diamond Temple and a magnificent instrumentation that includes an incredible guitar and great jazzy piano line over a deep and smooth groove. Check the instrumental for the full musical bliss.

DORUK OZLEN featuring BETH TROLLMANN "Do You Feel Me" - from the "Spring Sampler 2006" (Map Dance/CD Promo)
Right in time for theSsummer, the Swiss Map Dance label present their "Spring Sampler" that showcases their upcoming releases. "Do You Feel Me" by Doruk Ozlen is a deeply thumpin' production that features a wonderful piano line alongside sultry vocals by Beth Trollmann, sweet percussion and warm melodic keys that altogether create an uplifting and summery feeling. Watch out for more reviews from this sampler coming soon.

SUMO featuring AARON PHIRI "The Danceband" / "Unlove Me" (HEYA Hifi/CD Promo)
This is the third release taken from the forthcoming SUMO’s The Danceband album. This album's titletrack features Aaron Phiri from the hip-hop duo Hearin' Aid who provides a spoken message over the old-school flavored jacking house groove that is enhanced with a freshly recorded disco sample and some wicked keys. "Unlove me" sees SUMO going for something a little different as this track has sort of a broken beat feeling thanks to the infectious drums (in fact they are door slams), with Aaron Phiri providing the vocals that are accompanied by electronic keys.

LARRY LEVAN Journey Into Paradise (Rhino 2xCD)
Larry Levan is one of the truly legendary figures of contemporary dance music, as he has revolutionized the DJ's art with his eclective sets at the Paradise Garage. He was not only a visionary turntable artist, but also a innovative remixer, and his DJ sets featured a unique blend of dance music as well as music from various other genres. This double-CD features assembles 22 tracks that document the Paradise Garage experience, including both remixes and tracks from his DJ sets such as "Weekend" by Phreek, "Smack Dab In The Middle" by Janice McClain, "You Can't Hide Your Love" by David Joseph, "Lost In Music (84 Remix)" by Sister Sledge, "It Should Have Been You" by Gwen Guthrie, "Once In A Lifetime" by Talking Heads, "Why Leave Us Alone" by Five Special, "Clouds" by Chaka Khan and many, many more.
