Funny – I’d be tempted to say once again – how things keep on going, made of those regular ups and downs as time goes and most definitely doin’ circles... The so called disco music being one of the most beautiful exemples of the likes with people one hand celebrating its 30th B-Day and eventually recycle it with the (precious) assistance of technology. Meanwhile, some others would heavily spit on it, pretending that it’s definitely out of date, not to say that it sucks!!! This said, if one thang seems obvious, it’s the fact that – like it or not – the history of the said dance music hasn’t seen the arrival of any bigger, if not comparable phenomena since then... A thema that we’ll be developping along the forthcoming weeks...
If the arrival of the numerical is no doubt one of the biggest revolutions in the history of humanity, let’s not forget how the birth of disco had been another of the likes for more than one single reason, redefining the nature of the places dedicated to dancing as well as the codes of the latest, while seing the progressive disappearence of each form of dance as far as the couples were concerned. But also - at least at the beginning – the banning of the musicians to the sole benefit of the disc-jockeys who’d been for much in the launch of this new format known as the maxi single at the time and the unceasing evolutions in regards to what has to be considered as their own instruments. In other words, the turntables, from vinyl to CD and mp3 nowadays. Not to mention the production work. Better say that everything has gone quite quickly over those last 30 years. Not to say to quickly, judging by the misunderstanding, if not the obvious rejection of a part of the crowd. Too quickly probably because, surrounded by an always faster way of life, many of us have figured that the help of technology could allow us to compensate our lack of knowledge and know how in things needing years of learning. Too quickly, because we’ve let ourselves submerge by this famous system of the always more resulting in those periods of hesitation which sound like reminders of the history, if not of the nature. And it pretty looks like we’re in the middle of such a period at this precise moment with a generation – the one of those who’ve intiated the whole – being pushed by the following one although uch remains to be transmitted from one to another.
We’re up to celebrate the 30 years of disco and it’s definitely not without reasons even though if to many, everything or almost everything remains to be explained for a better understanding, speaking of which we’ll try to bring our contribution. MFSB
