GNARLES BARKLEY remplace Rakim / Sa 1er juillet / Miles Davis Hall
Album : St. Elsewhere / 19.05.06 / Warner
Gnarls Barkley est le projet bicéphale de messieurs Brian Burton et Thomas De Carlo Callaway, alias Danger Mouse et Cee-Lo. Le Dj américain Danger Mouse s'est fait connaÎtre il y a quelques années en balançant sur le net son "Grey album", un mix ébouriffant et dangereusement illégal du "White album" des Beatles avec le "Black album" du rappeur américain Jay-Z. Il a ensuite travaillé à la musique et à la production du dernier album des Gorillaz et publié dans la foulée l'album de Dangerdoom, en compagnie du génial rappeur underground new yorkais MF Doom. Cee-Lo, quant à lui, est l'éminence grise au sein du groupe Goodie Mob, et est depuis plus de dix ans au coeur de la plaque-tournante du hip-hop d'Atlanta qu'est la Dungeon Family, collectif dont est issu Outkast.
Ce duo américain fait main basse depuis plusieurs semaines sur les charts mondiaux avec le hit "Crazy". Outre-Manche en particulier, ce morceau s'est hissé cet hiver en tête des téléchargements alors que le cd n'était pas encore sorti et que le mystère régnait sur l'identité de ses auteurs. Leur premier album, St-Elsewhere, est un chef d'oeuvre de soul psychédélique et l'un des plus excitants albums de cette année.


EELS rejoint la soirée de Tracy Chapman / Me 5 juillet / Miles Davis Hall
Eels est un des groupes phares du rock américain indépendant (alternative-blues, pop etc.). Ce groupe à géométrie variable, leadé par le chanteur et multi-instrumentiste Mark Oliver Everett (Mr. E) surprend toujours son public et ose l’inatendu. Il se décline parfois avec des synthétiseurs, des cordes, ou encore des souffleurs. Après leur double album « Blinking Lights and Other Revelation » en 2005, Eels revient avec « Live at Town Hall » (Universal).

DONOVAN rejoint Solomon Burke / Je 13 juillet / Casino Barrière
L’éccossai Donovan a influencé dès les années 60 des générations entières. Ce poète visionnaire ouvre les portes d’un autre monde par ces ballades folks, ces “protest song“ et son mysticisme aérien. C’est un baladin, un troubadour, un rêveur plutôt sage, parfois même naïf. En 1968, John Lennon avait dit : “Donovan est aussi important et influent que peuvent l'être Bob Dylan ou les Beatles. Ecoutez-le : cet homme est un poète”.


HOMMAGE A CLAUDE NOUGARO / Lu 10 juillet / Casino Barrière
Le Montreux Jazz Festival connaît une longue tradition d’hommage à la chanson française en collaboration avec le Fonds d’Action SACEM (créé en 1977 pour conduire une politique de mécénat diversifiée en accordant des aides à tous les courants actifs de la création musicale). Après Charles Trenet en 1996, Serge Gainsbourg en 2000 ou encore Edith Piaf en 2004, la 40ème édition est l’occasion de rendre hommage au « jongleur de mots », Claude Nougaro. Ce « cracheur de swing » se définit plus comme un « motsicien » que comme un musicien. Il nous laisse de nombreuses chansons inoubliables comme le Jazz et la Java, tu verras, Île de Ré, Armstrong, Toulouse ou Petit Taureau. Pour lui rendre hommage, le Montreux Jazz Festival à le plaisir d’accueillir :

Angélique Kidjo (3 nominations aux Grammy Awards), nous offre dans son nouvel album « Oyaya » une vision du monde particulière, grâce à de subtiles interconnections musicales et des vocalises ancestrales.

Michel Legrand est tour à tour jazzman, musicien de films, compositeur de standards, chanteur, réalisateur, chef d'orchestre: en solo, en duo, en trio ou en big band, à Paris, Broadway, Cannes ou Hollywood, avec Stéphane Grappelli, Barbara Streisand, Kiri Te Kanawa ou Jean Guidoni, "Big Mike".

Leci est l’invitée surprise de la soirée du vendredi 7 juillet. Cettte chanteuse est une compositrice de Samba de Rio de Janeiro qui s’est également fait connaître comme commentatrice à la télévision durant le Carnaval. Ses hits sont notamment "Isso É Fundo de Quintal", "Só Quero Te Namorar", "Café com Pão", "Papai Vadiou" and "Olodum Força Divina".


BRAZIL FESTA / MARGARETH MENEZES / Sa 8 juillet / Auditorium Stavinski
Cette muse afropop brézilienne est désignée par le Los Angeles Times comme “the brazilian Aretha Franklin”. Elle a déjà publié 10 albums et connu un succès international retentissant.
Son dernier album Pra Você est une perle publiée sur EMI.


DEEP PURPLE / nouveau groupe WIRE DAISIES / Sa 15 juillet / Auditorium Stravinski
Les Wire Daisies (rock, pop, folkrock) sont un groupe anglais composés de 4 musiciens. Après avoir signé sur le label numérique The Transistor Project, et avoir rencontré un grand succès dans le téléchargement de leurs titres, ils ressortent l’album de leurs débuts sur EMI

Le poète dub I Wayne (Cliffroy Taylor) apporte un message fort à la jeunesse contre les violences insensées. Son son à la fibre jamaiquaine. “Lava Ground” est l’album qui lance l’artiste auprès du publique Reggae de par l’orgininalité et la fraîcheur de sa musique. Khanakah Harmony vient le rejoindre sur “Keep Burning Rome”. Une collaboration discogrphique est également prévue entre Fire Star et I Wayne, qui seront réunis sur le même plateau. Ce line-up est encore complété par un invité spécial en la personne de I Will, avec sa voix profonde de bariton souvent comparé à Dennis Brown.

Gnarls Barkley is the two-headed project of Brian Burton and Thomas DeCarlo Callaway, alias Danger Mouse and Cee-Lo. The american Dj Danger Mouse became famous a few years ago with his “Grey album” a bootleg album made exclusively with a mix of the Beatles’ « White album » and the “Black album” of the American rapper Jay-Z. Then he worked on the music and production of Gorillaz’ album and published at the same time the album Dangerdoom in collaboration with the rap genius MF Doom from New York. About Cee-Lo, he is in the center of the group Goodie Mob, and has been for more than ten years in Family Dungeon, a collective Atlanta that also includes the band Outkast. This American duet has been at the top of the charts for weeks with the hit “Crazy”. Their first album St-Elsewhere is a masterpiece of psychedelic soul and one of more exciting albums of this year.


EELS join the evening of Tracy Chapman / Me July 5 / Miles Davis HallEels is one of the spotlights bands of the independent american rock scene (alternative-blues, pop). Eels and its multi-instrumentalist singer Mark Oliver Everett (Mr. E) always surprises its public with unusual line-up and special projects, both on stage and on their albums. Sometimes they use synthetizers, cords, or even a jazzy horn section. After their double album “Blinking Lights and Other Revelation” in 2005, Eels is back with “Live At Town Hall” (Universal).

The scottish songwriter Donovan has influenced many generations since the sixties. He is a visonary whose words open the doors of another world. His folk songs, his “protest song“ and his mysticism makes him a spontanuous wise dreamer. In 1968, John Lennon said about him: “Donovan is as important and influent as Bob Dylan or the Beatles. Listen to his music, this man is a poet”.

Montreux Jazz Festival has a long tradition of tributes to the greatest french singers of all times, in collaboration with the Funds of Action SACEM (created in 1977 to give assistance to the active musical creation). After Charles Trenet in 1996, Serge Gainsbourg in 2000 or Edith Piaf in 2004, the 40th edition is the occasion to celebrate the “juggler of words”, Claude Nougaro. His death leaves us with many unforgettable songs like le Jazz et la Java, tu verras, Île de Ré, Armstrong, Toulouse ou Petit Taureau. For this very special tribute, the Montreux Jazz Festival has the great pleasure to present the following artists :

The biggest news from Jamaica this year is the return of roots riddims as the dominant sound in reggae. I Wayne is the artist whose songs are defining this new trend. “Lava Ground” is the debut album from I Wayne (Cliffroy Taylor) the 24 year old Alto from Portmore, St. Catherine who has captured the Jamaican listening audience with a fresh distinctive sound. His wispy voice and blazing lyrics are winning him fans world wide. The project includes the #1 Jamaican radio hits “Living In Love”, “Lava Ground” and “Can’t Satisfy Her” (which is currently climbing the US radio charts). Khanakah Harmony joins I Wayne on the track “Keep Burning Rome”. A collaboration is also planed between Fire Star and I Wayne to do some tracks together on a futur album It’s thus not surprising to see them together on the stage of Montreux. A very special guest will also be playing at this very special night “I Will“ with its deep bariton voice often compared to Dennis Brown.
