We're really pleased to be teaming up with Amnesty International and their Make Some Noise campaign as our primary charity for this year's Bestival. Make Some Noise is a global venture by Amnesty International that mixes music, celebration and action to protect individuals wherever freedom, justice and equality are denied. Thanks to an extraordinary gift from Yoko Ono the recording rights to 'Imagine' and John Lennon's entire solo songbook Amnesty International is harnessing the power of music to inspire a new generation to stand up for human rights. www.amnesty.org/noise
Brian Eno, opponent of the invasion and occupation of Iraq and long-time supporter of Stop the War Coalition, is making a guest appearance with one of world music most exciting talents Rachid Taha on the main stage at Bestival. Eno of course is best known as a musician and producer, but he's also an artist, professor and thinker. He's worked with everyone from David Byrne to U2 and David Bowie plus written soundtracks for Trainspotting, Velvet Goldmine and Heat. He worked with Rachid on his album 'Tekitoi' and has performed with him in Paris, St Petersburg, Moscow and last year's Stop the War benefit gig at the Astoria in London. Bestival are over the moon that he and Rachid Taha are joining us on the Isle of Wight!
Also happening at Bestival this summer
.Hip hop you cant stop, reggae, funk, soul, Balearic beats and a healthy dosing of New Orleans showbiz shizzle, Southern Comfort's Fat Tuesday has a reputation for throwing some of the best parties around. And this year theyre bringing their party to a Friday, Saturday and Sunday! Southern Comfort Fat Tuesday draws on the amazing sights and sounds of one of the greatest musical cities on earth, New Orleans. Lined up to play is our very own Rob da Bank, Ashley Beedle, Alice Russell, Dennis Alcapone, Crazy P, DJ Yoda, The Nextmen, The Soul Jazz Sound System, Blackbeard plus soon to be the hottest new band of the summer, Sugardaddy. And of course therell be plenty of fine cocktails to wash em all down with. And if you cant wait till September to check out the Fat Tuesday then take a little trip to Ibiza on 13 June where well be celebrating the collaboration with a party in a beautiful Ibizan finca north of Ibiza town.
And as if all thats not enough, we will also see the return of Green Gartsides Scritti Politti who after seven years comes back with an amazing a new album 'White Bread, Black Beer' released through Rough Trade (& out now).
This summer's hottest new thing, Lily Allen will bring her blend of chirpy pop-ska to the mainstage. Come September everybody will be singing along to 'LDN', 'Smile' and 'Knock 'em Out' as she quickly becomes the soundtrack to the summer.
Plus new additions to the live line-up include The Long Blondes, M.Craft, Brakes, Semi Finalists, Max Sedgley and the Shoots, Kid Carpet, Good Shoes, Grandadbob, The Pipettes, Kish Mauve and New Young Pony Club. Phew!
The almighty Carl Cox will also be joining us for an old skool set in the Big Top and the Plump DJs get down and dirty in the Bollywood Bar alongside Justin Robertson, DJ Derek, Justice, Krafty Kuts and Bobby Friction & Nihal's annual Sunday afternoon mash up.
That's not all mind! Scroll down to read the full list... so far!
"I'm a bit biased but Bestival 2006 is shaping up rather nicely." Says Rob da Bank. "Aside from rare UK shows from the Pet Shop Boys and Scissor Sisters and no lesser folk than Rachid Taha, Brian Eno and Carl Cox coming on board there's so much else to do: new things for us are a green field dedicated to sustainable energies and traditional crafts, a healthy dose of debate, comedy, poetry and open mic, giant tree climbing as well as the the return of the Inflatable Church with even more weddings planned, the chance to sign up for Come Dancing classes, have a solar powered sauna or watch a solar powered film in the cinema ... And shedloads of new bands and DJs to get your ears around. Roll on September!"
