Eleonora presents Underground Soul vol. 1 [Expansion Records]
Most of the best bands, artists, songs and music scenes have started life on the underground before being discovered and hitting the mainstream. Soul music in each decade since the 60s has had its own unique sound and generation of fans who have followed artists from an underground movement to mainstream success, and it’s no different now.
Since 2000 there has been another new wave of soul music, and the World Wide Web has revolutionised the way in which DJs, journalists and fans have spread the word. One such website and on-line music community is Underground Soul, founded and run by Italian DJ and journalist Eleonora Cutaia. Recognised as an international tastemaker, this is the first of Eleonora’s choice selections to be released as a compilation and features the cream of cutting edge new soul artists. It features a track from Corinne Bailey Rae recorded just prior to her No.1 smash hit album which amply illustrates the demand in 2006 for well crafted, quality soul music. Also here are Ivana Santilli (produced by Omar) with debut performances by Heidi Vogel and Porsche Smith ahead of their highly anticipated new albums. From Ether Records, home to one of Eleonora’s mentors Gilles Peterson, is also the excellent Silhouette Brown.

Tidy collection of independant contemporary soul from across the globe and thankfully with a healthy dose of British talent including a pre Top of the Pops Corinne Bailey Rae singing for fellow Leeds hipsters The New Master Sounds. Luckily for the many of you who missed it V & Jill Scott’s Jazzy Jeff produced masterpiece Born Again is included and elsewhere Silhouette Brown will please thanks to Kaidi Tatham and Dego production as will former US3 front woman Alison Crockett.

Underground soul from around the globe -- a really great collection that shows the deepening sound of modern music in the 21st Century! Despite the geographic distance that separates the artists in the collection, there's a really unified feel here -- a love of classic influences remade in a fresher style for the new millenium -- served up in modes that show there's still a heck of a lot of territory to be explored in modern soul music. Most of the artists here are ones that are at the top of our charts at Dusty Groove -- and the set was very nicely put together by Eleonora of Underground Soul!
