ON THE AIRWAVES: NINO MOSCHELLA ON KPFA'S HARD KNOCK RADIO & A LIVE PERFORMANCE ON KALX
| |
Nino Moschella appeared on KPFA’s “Hard Knock Radio” last Friday in San Francisco and spoke at length with host Weyland Southon about writing and recording his debut album The Fix, growing up in Friant, his Italian upbringing and insight on his unique, critically-acclaimed sound. The interview is now online and available for download/streaming HERE. Later, Moschella’s band members joined Nino for a live performance on KALX-FM 90.7 courtesy of Duncan, the Friday afternoon host. An excerpt of the set, “In Your Bedroom”, is available HERE.
The first time we heard Nino Moschella's demo we were blown away by his gritty and soulful vocal styling and unique lo-fi funk productions and signed him-up instantly. The Fix is his debut album, and is a forward thinking blend of backyard funk, psychedelic soul, and '60's rock. Moschella blurs the lines between electronic and acoustic music, and tracks on The Fix have been compared to Sly Stone, Prince, and Dr John.
“Propulsive debut... thumps with hard-hitting drums, bluesy guitars and funky ass bass lines” VIBE
“The Fix is an astounding work due to Moschella's nuclear-powered life force and phenomenal vocal, melodic, and rhythmic abilities. To paraphrase the aphorist James Brown, "He's got soul, he's superbad.” THE STRANGER
“Elastic like Van Morrison, smooth like Marvin Gaye” OC WEEKLY
“One of the albums that I've been digging in a big way is this! Absolutely superb... absolutely classic!” GILLES PETERSON

DARONDO IN ROLLING STONE: CD/LP BACK IN STOCK
| |
“Sexy, earthy funk... formidable tracks. Four stars.” ROLLING STONE
Luv N’Haight’s collection of Darondo recordings, Let My People Go, has just received four stars in Rolling Stone’s summer double-issue, at newsstands now. Rolling Stone joins a growing list of magazines singing the praises of Darondo’s raw, early 70’s Al Green-style soul, including The Times, Spin, Elle, MOJO, Time Out, Q, The Onion A.V. Club, Relix, Swindle, and Wax Poetics. Since the release, Ubiquity has uncovered more material which will be released later this year as a companion EP. For now, you can download interviews with Darondo that aired earlier this year on “Weekend America” HERE and “Studio 360” HERE. Free video clips from Darondo’s mid-80’s cable access television shows “Darondo’s Penthouse” and “Doze Comedy Hour” are available at www.ubiquityrecords.com/lh048.html.
Back in the day Darondo was seen cruising around town in a white Rolls Royce with a "Darondo" license plate. He opened-up for James Brown and lived a colorful lifestyle hanging with folks like the notorious Fillmore Slim. Take a listen to these tracks, released for the first time together on an album, and you may agree that he could have been the next Al Green or Sly Stone. But about 25 years ago Darondo disappeared. Let My People Go is nine tracks long, compiling the three super-rare 7" singles that comprised Darondo's musical career and includes three previously unreleased tracks recently found on a reel of demos. Mixing low-rider soul with blues and r'n'b, he delivered in a variety of styles. From the socially-charged title track to the sexually-driven funk of "Legs" Darondo's raw soul sound is turning heads worldwide.
