Welcome back ! So yes, gotta do wid’it, time to get back on da run ! You’ve somehow missed the sun (for those who’ve been off in July here or there in Europe)? The record pusher at the club next door has finally disgusted you with his inevitable golds issued during the Middle Age? Okay then don’t you worry about a thang as we’ve got everything needed to getcha back into a good mood and have the Summer longer...
Tons of Latin flavas on this backin’ issue. Far more festive than the (bad) discoïd souvenirs alla Daft Punk !!! Beginnin’ with Todd Terry who under the Gypsymen guise gets back to his best level with his boricaish cover version of the famous ‘Barabatiri’ delivered with remixes courtesy of Masters At Work (US-Sound Design). No surprisingly, Miami Sound Machine’s classic ‘Doctor Beat’ as revamped by ‘Little’ Louie Vega for Gloria Estefan and retitled ‘Y Tu Conga’ (UK-Epic). Other rising star, R&B songstress Toni Braxton with ‘Spanish Guitar’ being given for remix duties to Joe Claussell. Quite a poppy result at the end of the day which has probably been the source of substancial funances for the latest with only the instrumental version worth the listen (US-Arista). Far better is the smooth & soulful ‘Dreaming’ by The Soul Mouvement featuring Onesongbyrd & Bayinaah, a concept with production work to be credited to Nick Jones & Kalim Shabazz (US-Imani/Shelter).
On an easy ‘Bossa très jazz’ mood, check out Fluide featuring Baccara’s ‘Vocé é o meu amor’ with remixes seing for the very first time Ralphi Rosario exploring this spectrum : the first cut to be taken from Abstract Latin Lounge, a new series appearing on King Street/Nitegrooves’ catalogue... Not to mention Luaka Bop presents Si*sé’s Cuando’ by King Britt, on a mood somehow more loungey than dancefloor (US-Giant Step).
More traditional is the abstract & progressive ‘Mocha Latina’ by Antonio Ocasio (UK-Rekawa Sounds). Not as interesting though as the transcient Afro-funk ‘Moog Rock’ by Frankie Valentine makin’ his first appearence on Austrian label Sunshine Enterprises. Meanwhile, the lovers of the said ‘great music’ should have the appetite feeded while listening to Mr Hermano’s ’Free As The Morning Sun’, on that same spiritual vibe as Nuyorican Soul’s mythic ‘I’m The Black Gold Of The Sun (UK-Disorient). On that same label, also worth the check is the eclectic Miyazawa’s ‘The Afrosick EP’ featuring ‘Capita do areia’ as relifted by Japan’s famous Little Big Bee. Meanwhile The Brazilian Stuzidel adds another not to be missed cut this month by the likes of the booming & festive ‘Samba da sliva’ (Venusworks).
Ron Trent who recently dropped ‘Future Love’ under the Atlantis moniker (with a remix courtesy of Chris Brann aka Wamdue Project) has another contribution for Giant Step while relifting ‘Saturday Night Experience’ alongside Blaze for former Shalamar female singer Jody Watley makin’ her debut on the same label. Some big art as usual, to be followed by the release of the Giant Step Sessions vol.1 comp. awaited next month. More of Trent’s charasteristic touch alongside Anthony Nicholson by the likes of USG featuring Se’vere with ‘Have I Lost You’ taken from the Sankofa compilation awaited on Prescription. As for Blaze, they deliver another piece of beauty, revamping Jill Scott’s 'He Loves Me’ talkin’ about which we wonder what Epic is waiting for to release it officially (white label). Not a single info on the other hand about that other white label entitled ‘Get Back Up’ which looks pretty well like being sung by BeBe Winans.
Some mo’ Revd Martin Luther King influence... Check out the shiny ‘The Dream’ taken from the ‘Soul Vibe EP’ courtesy of Johnny Nunez & Greg Anderson, aka Combinations (US-Som). Frankly speaking, if the first remixes of the lightning Soulstice’s ’Fall Into You’ do not bring anything as compared to the album version – incl. Miguel Migs one (US-Om), the four ones declining Gaelle’s ’Rain’ are really worth the listen (US-Naked). Meanwhile Chicago hailing ‘Sunrise’ by Solaris sounds like a Californian production, build on a sample of the classic Herb Alpert’s ’Rise’ (US-Guidance).
After Photek then London Elektricity, Robert Owens keeps on acting like a globe trotter, dropping the effective ‘Never Too Late’ on Italian label Stellar Records with an interesting remix by Victor Simonelli. Reminding a bit of Joe Smooth’s classic ‘Promised Land’, the classy ‘I Feel U’ by Melodious Fonk presents Toni Blak is not as seducive though as the promising ‘The Sun Will Shine’ by Serenity Project, full of Latin jazz fragrances alla George Duke/Earth, Wind & Fire. Two concepts to be credited to Chi-town collective the Blak Beat Niks who’ve just launched their label (Melodious Fonk).
If you ever thought – like us – that Incognito’s latest LP was a bit too conventional, it’s far from being the case regarding the remixes already around. Such as ‘Castle In The Air’ with its Afro-tech flavour as declined by Vikter Duplaix, and also the groovy ‘There Will Come A Day’ retouched by Bluey himself on some atmospheric breakbeat jazz vein (UK-Talkin’ Loud/Promo). Aqua Bassino, who’s recently had his debut LP released on F-Com delivers some extra goodie with the Balearic & jazzy ‘Here Is’ for NYC label Statra under the Jay Salino guise. Meanwhile German stable Str15 unleashes the Glissando Bros.’s ‘Even Better’ with a stunning contribution from female singer Claire Dietrich and additional production courstesy of Bristish twisters Swag. Funk oriented ‘When I’m With You’ by Georg Levin on its original version deserves the same attention as atmosphericaly reworked by Jimpster (D-Recreation). MFSB
