THIS IS NOW, THAT WAS THEN…
IDM MEMORIES (WMC'2003)
By the time this column is to be online,
we'll be on our way to Miami, our bags and memories ready to be refueled with
music, images and other goodies from WMC' 2004. Meanwhile, we leave you with
this brief reminder of what happened last year…
Much had been said in the preceeding months til the very last moment before the
Conf' with rumours of a possible cancellation due to the 2nd Gulf War
but at then end of the day, both would finally happen, this provoking quite a
special atmosphere around. Also worth to remember the fact that house music on
its whole was quite criticized by a substancial amount of observers ; mainly
hailing from the post-rock culture, heavily presenting the then electroclash
hype as THE next big thang around ! A year after, time has obviously spoken
reminding us – should we have forgotten – that only consistent music (& people)
survive…
2K3'd
been the time for a new breathe coming from almost everywhere. Can't help myself
remembering Roy Davis Jr playin' for the first time what would become the
famous "Back 2 Chicago" featuring Detroit talent, Malik (Alston),
released six months later on King Street. But also, Glenn Underground
delivering some other goodies with his own "Flu Bug" on Shelter or remixing "Yes
Lord" for Kurt Lykes on Under My Skin label.
Yes, 2K3 would also be Detroit's new
awakening, as demonstrated by people like… Malik with his "Caterpillar EP
on Third Ear, Dwele, Amp Fiddler and also Norman Talley
with the vibrant "Change" revamped by Mike Huckaby that myself would
license a little bit later on as an introduction on my CD mix for Bargrooves
- Espace Privé on London label, Seamless Recordings. Also at the time, what
to me stays as the best remix done by Mike 'Agent X' Clark for
Esperanza featuring Carolyn Punter on Canadian label, Gotsoul.
From Baltimore, DJ Oji was getting
ready to release the effective "I'm Feeling You" featuring Carolyn Victorian
from his forthcoming LP – Underground X-Perience – that to me has been
one of the albums of last year (Poji Records). From Philly, the versatile
Vikter Duplaix was to drop his own remixes of the sweet and emotive "Morena"
(Hollywood). Meanwhile, local band, Kindred Spirit was to give us another
demonstration of the fact that true soul will never die with their "Surrender To
Love Sampler' on Hidden Beach.
Hard to forget about NYC, Masters At Work's Elements Of Life Party in
Miami with, a once more full bag of goodies to be given, featuring a 4 7inch
boxset including music from Markus Enochson,
Antonio, Ocasio, Manzel, not to mention some electrifying work
from Josh Wink, the destructive "Frenzy" from Kenny Dope, some
remixes of B.O.P.'s classic "Zabalaza", as well as a killer remix of
MAW featuring Lynae's "Life Is But A Dream" by Frankie Feliciano,
sampling some rhythm part from the evergreen Third World's interpretation
of Philly classic "Now That We Found Love" by The O'Jays. Meanwhile, 'Little'
Louie Vega was reaching our hearts and souls with the stunning "Cerca De Mi"
starring Raul Midon. Mateo & Matos, staying on the afro tip with
the best remembered "The Chant" from the "Zulu Funk EP" on Large as Kerri
Chandler was giving us an apetizer to his Trionisphere album with the vibrant "Never
Knew Her" (King Street)
Also not to be missed to the list, French
man, DJ Gregory with the first versions of "Elle" on his own Faya Combo
label + a killer remix of "Everyday" for Mood II Swing's half, John
Ciafone on Boombastic. Parisian label Silver Network delivering what to me
stands as it's best release so far: "Do You Remember" from Atlanta's pair,
Kemeticjust with a shinning rework from Charles Webster.
