Australia IDMW.Com correspondant, Vahé K gets back in action with the third installment of his monthly column, reviewing Colin Hay and Jazzanova live gigs over there + a few goodies for yer hears.
THE LEISURE SUITE # 003 (Reviews & Mista Vee’z Goodies)
Australia has been enjoying the warmth and relaxation of the Summer sun for the last couple of months. Although myself living in Melbourne it’s hard to tell exactly what season you’re in when you get blistering heat one day, and freezing cold the next. But that’s my city and I wouldn’t change it, not for all the candy in the candy universe! (if there were such thing as a candy universe, that is).
With the warm weather brings a plethora of music-related activities. So much so, a broke semi-employed Uni student such as myself (not a student for long, though, I graduate mid-year) has to rely on family members to pay the dosh necessary in order to fulfil my somewhat obsessive desire to hear, feel, absorb and ultimately get lost in some good music. Apart from drugs, alcohol and big butts, music still firmly remains my number one addiction. I mean who else would spend a whole day zoning out in front of the computer creating a deep house mix from scratch, and ending up with a headache, wondering where the hell the fucking day went afterwards??? No. This kind of madness isn’t something the average human goes through in the day-to-day meanderings of life, this is an act reserved for the hopeless audiophiles of the world.
*points to self*
Yeah, I’m patient zero.
In order to stay true to my audiophile tendencies, I was practically orgasming at the two music gigs I was about to attend. You could say my wee-wee got wet at the tip with anticipation (I know the image excites y’all, but keep it in your pants ladies). The first was Colin Hay live @ The Corner Hotel on January 12, the second was Jazzanova + Clara Hill live @ Miss Libertine on January 19.
To begin with Mr. Colin Hay, I must admit I am only a recent convert to his solo work. Just in case his name doesn’t ring a bell, Hay was the lead singer and songwriter of the hugely successful Aussie band Men At Work, though Hay himself is Scottish. After that success had faded from the public’s collective consciousness, he went on to release several critically-acclaimed solo albums, the later ones mostly consisting of acoustic ballads and covers of his older material. My first taste of his acoustic prowess came from watching an episode of “Scrubs”, which featured one of his old Men At Work hits, “Overkill”. Colin even appears in the episode. My next taste came with the soundtrack to the emo-friendly movie Garden State, which featured the haunting “I Just Don’t Think I’ll Ever Get Over You”. I promptly went out and copped every single album of his I could find, and subsequently got hip to a very talented and lyrically gifted musician and artist. One who transcended his iconic penning of the classic, but cheesy, “Land Downunder”. Acoustic soft rock doesn’t get any better than this folks. Feeling down in the dumps? Contemplating life and your place in it? Colin Hay’s deft touch on the guitar and his soothing vocals are your perfect aural landscape.
The gig itself was a pretty chilled out affair, with Colin working most of the night solo on stage with just his acoustic guitar. One surprising element of his live show had to be the little comedy routines he would do between songs. The man is pretty damn funny. He was almost Billy Connoly on the night, that is if Billy could also sing well and play guitar. And yeah, Colin swears just as much, if not even more, than Billy.
Colin was joined on stage numerous times by his musician wife, Cecilia Noel, and his sister, Carol Hay. He will be releasing a new solo album on Compass Records, the first in five years, on April 24 2007. The album is called Are You Lookin’ At Me? You can find out more about the man and purchase his music at the official website: colinhay.com
Here are a couple of videos I took on the night:
I’ve gotta admit, I have a crush on Clara Hill. But let’s face it, it’s not exactly the hardest thing in the world to develop a crush on Clara lol. About a month ago me and an old friend (Michael – aka “Sphinx” … yes he’s Egyptian) descended upon a funky little hamlet of a club called Miss Libertine to witness one of the Jazzanova crew show-off his DJing prowess, and of course to see Ms. Hill do her thing. They were fresh off the plane according to Clara, probably suffering from jetlag, but they didn’t really show it. Clara performed a bunch of songs from her newest album, and one very recognisable tune from Jazzanova’s album, “no use”. Although she was visibly tired, she provided a very adequate set, but perhaps a few more recognisable tunes from her first album would’ve got the crowd a bit more hype.

The DJ set was anything short of fantastic. I couldn’t quite recognise which member of J-Nova it was, but it didn’t matter. It’s strange that whenever you think of Jazzanova, you think of the entire collective and not just one single member. So when they go on “tour”, even when it’s just one member on the decks, it’s almost like the entire group is embodied and represented within that one member. It’s kind of like the Jamiroquai effect, where everyone identifies Jay Kay (the lead singer) as “Jamiroquai”. The set ranged from various music styles but mainly covered house and electro. Near the end of the night, Clara jumped off-stage and was standing just a few feet away. The fanboy in me couldn’t resist going up to her and asking for a picture, during which my out-of-control curly locks got in the way. She then turned to me and commented that she liked my hair. Actually it was more like, “I like…this, it’s good!” :D

And finally we come to the section which will have u scrobbling for hours (never heard of scrobbling? Check out Last.fm): Mista Vee’z Goodies. This is a semi-weekly thing I began a few weeks ago on my blog, The Leisure Suite. Essentially I post up 10 random songs which I’m feeling at that current moment in time for whatever reason, and you download and listen and go “wooowwww, Vee’s got more taste than a gelati shop!” here are the first two posts so far in the “Goodies” series. To download these songs simply right-click & save-as.
Enjoy.

GÁBOR SZABÓ - Stormy This song was most recently sampled on John Legend’s "Save Room". You may slightly gasp like I did when you realise just how much of John’s version is actually ripped straight from the original.
JAY DEE - Heroin JointThe late great James Yancey (aka "Jay Dee"/"J. Dilla") flipping one of my favourite James Brown jams, "Theme From King Heroin".
MR. DALVIN - Get Mine Just when I thought I had a handle on everything related to Da Bassment crew (Jodeci, Timbaland, Missy Elliot, Magoo, Ginuwine, Tweet (then part of the group Suga), Sista, Playa + many others), out popped this soundtrack cut by the underrated Mr. Dalvin (of Jodeci, brother of DeVante Swing). the song is featured on the Players Club movie soundtrack.
DIGABLE PLANETS - Graffiti A classic song from a timeless and classic album by the Digables. If you still have yet to experience the ethereal pleasures of their second (and final) Grammy-winning album, Blowout Comb, then go drown in a lake of Diet-Coke.
MUSIQ - BuddyMusiq (formerly known as Musiq Soulchild) continues to go from strength to strength with this absolutely bangin’ new single release from his forthcoming Luvanmusiq album.
DWELE - Beep Me, Find Me Dwele is a genius. no shit. Here’s a new project he’s currently workin’ on, where he sings as the character of his fictional son, John.
PRINCE - Sisterlol. Only Prince can get away with making a funky song about incest.
DJ QUIK - One On 1Quik is that dude. He gets down n dirty on this. One of his more sexier tracks from Under The Influence.
TWEET - Get Away (Move On) A non-album track from around when Southern Hummingbird first came out. this song was a b-side on the "Call Me" single.
