Who’s Yam Who ??? Or more
precisely who are they ?
Just two regular dudes, Andy
Williams (the discreet leader) and Desmond Morgan aka Little Rico (the
percussionist).
Beside their daily occupation
behind the counter of Reckless (the famous Soho record shop), they form an
almighty pair of producers and, above all, extraordinary remixers. Buzz in the
underground has spread fast, reaching dizzy heights in less than a year…
From Raphael Saadiq to Little Brother,
Dwayne Morgan, Allison Crockett, Dwele, Nas, Pharell Williams and the list goes
on… the least to be said is that those superb elusively Yam Who signed edits
have made their full effect. A beautiful example of (quality) cross-over sound
which is so rare and precious nowadays…
This said, if Yam Who’s
reputation has got so big in just a few months, those guys weren’t exactly born
yesterday. And their intention is to enjoy a long and solid carrier (that’s all
we wish them). As a matter of fact, before the Yam Who? enigma had been on every
connoisseur’s lips, a few may have noticed some funky, slightly offbeat
productions around under the name of Fuzz Against Junk, their first baby
sadly almost born dead, as their debut-album’s was due for imminent release when
their former house, Dave Lee’s Nuphonic label, definitively ceased its
activities in 2002. Ironically, the same corporate industry that forced them to
stay in the shadow recently came running to eat in the palms of their hands. As
an unexpected result, the descent success of those sneaky bootlegs (often better
than the original versions) bringing them a lot of official remix deals !
Judging only by their impressive
catalogue (some of the best artists in R&B, soul and hip hop) so far, “sky looks
obviously like the limit" and some astronomic cheques could soon be flowing too
! The Neptunes better watch out as they could seriously give them a run
for their money and even if they don’t get that far, they’ve already proved to
their few lucky listeners that sometimes genuine musicians can still bring sheer
class to major pop records.
In the meantime, they’ve been
focusing on the real deal, the next strategic move: their own material. Spending
a lot of weeks in the studio, especially with a living legend of the disco punk
era, Chaz Jankel, the man in person ! A surprising combo we just can’t
wait to hear in full swing…
Still keeping on the down low,
Yam Who also stress their love for Britain’s very own broken beat (an influence
specially manifesting itself in their rework on Dwele’s "Angel"). So you
can often bump into them at London’s best club, Plastic People, at the
prestigious Co-Op nights (with IG Culture playing alongside Bugz In
The Attic, 4Hero and the likes), not to mention the famous Notting Hill Arts
Club A very cutting edge scene they respect a lot without getting stuck into it
too much. So Yam Who - huge music lovers and record collectors since the 80’s -
always stay as open and eclectic as they are in the context of a diverse DJ set
up and down and all around. Fighting against diktats "de rigueur" on the
dancefloors in modern days club culture (such as a big old kick drum every four
bar as an obligation), preferring more emphasis on melodies and nice soulful
songs .May they be fully heard !
