So many things said/reported here or there over the last months in regards to a genre – house music – in prey to so many variations that it has become difficult to surround the outlines of, with all what such a situation may induce in terms of confusion, leadin’ some people to speak about the necessity of redifinition/refundation of the whole, under the penalty of pure and simple disappearence on a more or less long term…
Asked about the image deficit of house music as compared to other genres such as hip-hop or R&B, Large Music label head Jeff Craven comin’ out of a city (Chicago) – where - should this have to be reminded ? – this form of expression first appeared some 20 years ago, had his explanation while mentioning what to him was an obvious lack of adequation in regards to the expectations of the younger generations. A feeling more or less echoed both on the editorial choices of a big majority of the said specialized press and the line-ups on display at most of what are nowadays’ nightclubbing temples, from London to Ibiza and… Miami!!!
This said, and even though the facts seem to give reason to our interlocutor at first sight, let’s not forget how there’s a whole ocean between what comes out of the rules of a marketing the application of which is instantaneous as opposed to the impact of an artistic approach finding its whole dimension as time goes, like a bottle of vintage wine in comparison to a can of soda for instance. Thus therefore, and although one could have the impression of being geared to a certain scepticism, not to say a frank pessimism, these are those people, those ‘ventures’ the radiance of which, outside the beaten path suffices to give faith in a possible tomorrow away from the compromission. But here as well, let’s take care of not forgetting how this feeling of appearent achievement is first and foremost the result of not only an aptitude, but also countless hours of observation, digest and work, as shown by Louie Vega’s current position, whose expression ability seems boundless, whatever may be the context, the environnement, the genre or the media… More to follow soon on a filmed conversation (the very first of the genre soon to be displayed here on IDMW.Com) prior to his European week tour where he succesively played/is to play in Paris (invited by Franck Roger), UK at the Southport Weekender, Lyon and Basel alongside our UDM Show brothers.
