LIVE: Stefan Abingdon (pic), Santogold DECKS: DJ Eleven (Rub Club, NY) plus residents Seb Chew, Leo Greenslade
Everyone knows that the weekend starts on a Thursday, don't they? Resident DJs Seb Chew and Leo Greenslade's block party mix of 80's boogie, upfront hip hop, hard funky mash-ups and RnB rarities has made YOYO one of the best hip hop parties around. It's also the favorite hang out spot for Kanye West, Faith Evans and DJ to the stars Mark Ronson (who stops by to spin whenever he's this side of the Atlantic)
Young, handsome and instantly likeable Stefan Abingdon is a perfect example of the future of British pop-music. He raps, he sings, he plays the guitar. He writes great songs that find just the right balance between an 'urban' edge and a self-deprecating sense of humour. He also looks like the singer from Depeche Mode which is a nice card to have up your sleeve. Abingdon's band are more than talented enough to reproduce the excellent production of his recorded material.. Santogold is composed of Santo and Gold. A dynamic duo of vocalist and producer, Santo and Gold are survivors of a half-century worth of living along musical evolution's most cutting edges. |
Friday 18.05: INSPIRATION INFORMATION 6pm-2am, free b4 8pm, £6 b4 11 pm and £8 after |
|
LIVE: Indigo Brown (pic), Elviin DECKS: Patrick Forge, Phil Asher LADIES FIRST: Sasha Field
Every Friday night Inspiration Information rolls out a selection of quality music, from Disco to Latin. Residents Phil Asher and Patrick Forge are still holding down the most diverse and soulful musical agenda in London town. The early evening session kicks off at 6pm with an all female DJ roster, Ladies First, bringing new energy to the mix and from 8.30pm we present a live element each Friday night.
Two singer-songwriters on a musical journey. Indigo Brown, writes across genres with vocal and harmonic arrangements that will make you tilt your head to the side, scratch it and say 'what?' The duo came about quite by accident, on a joint trip to NY to promote their then separate musical talents and 6 fun filled weeks later landed back at Heathrow as a bonafide writing team. |
| Saturday 19.05: afternoon: ROTA: 4pm-8pm, free |
|
|
WITH: Magenta Skycode (pic), The Zetland Players and more
Raving reviews in media and abroad have paralleled the Finnish group Magenta Skycode with the likes of Air, David Sylvian, The Cure, Kings of Convenience, The Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev and Cocteau Twins and the early/present electronic movement. The songs of MS have an affectionate connection with songs of their peers. The Zetland Players play infectious folk, evocative of the grand likes of Dylan and Hank Williams. The music has a crisp, defined sound, is pleasurable to listen to andgets you tapping your feet before you realise you are. for more on RoTa click here |
Saturday 19.05 eve: BRAZILIAN LOVE AFFAIR 8pm-2am, £6 till 11pm and £8 after |
|
WITH: Patrick Forge and DJ Lucia (pic)
Brazilian Love Affair sidesteps the samba clichés to forge a real musical bridge between London and Rio as the temptation of thunderous batucadas, bossanova and dirty Brazilian funk continues to seduce and ignite the sensual crowd. Patrick Forge unites the steamiest grooves from both sides of the Atlantic to raise the temperature on the dancefloor to the boiling point! Look out for crisp and bittersweet Caprinhas crossing the bar at great quantities and speed as we raise the roof for another Brazilian Love Affair as if there was no tomorrow!
Born in Rio de Janeiro, Lucia is one of the very few female djs around playing Brazilian music. Renowned for her contagious energy and big smile behind the decks, she has an innate flair for mixing up bossas, sambas, funk and the finest nu-Brazilian beats. Well-known in the west London scene, Lucia has been living in London for several years and knows her music inside out. She began collecting records from the early age of 5 and reached the dancefloor by the time she was 12. She never stopped since! The progression from the dancefloor to being behind the decks was just a matter of time. |
Sunday 20.05: COSTA URBANA 5pm - 1am, £7/5 |
|
LIVE: Ballalouda, Mor Karbasi (pic) , plus Elles Clowns DECKS: Costa Urbana Djs Nova, Dj Alia, Muezzin
Costa Urbana is the mediterranean club night anarchy in its full glory with live acts exploring, resident and guest djs, anar'clown troupe Elles Clowns, backgammon, Sicilian buffet, polaroids, watermelons, olives...
Ballalouda ((live at 10pm) play ontagious party music with plenty of rhythm, energy, funk, laughter, dancing - with drums, percussion, bass, Spanish guitar, saxophone, vocals - singing about the energy and chaos of the city, being in love, being in a bus or being in a stupor. Mor Karbasi (live at 9pm) is Incredibly talented and just in her early 20s, singing in Ladino, aka Sephardic, a now almost extinct amalgamation of 15thc Spanish, Hebrew and the occasional Arabic, Greek and Turkish word. You are bound to think that you are listening to something very familiar, but most of all, Mor has a voice to die for and she will sing the lyrics straight to your heart. Since its inception almost four years ago, the rotating resident djs Nova, Dj Alia, Muezzin have come up with a sonic amalgamation of gypsy cheek, Istanbulian groove, bouzouki discopop, Maghreb r'n'b, organic gnawa galloping trance, tarantella dub, rock n' raï, Bosnian turbofolk, punk pizzica, canzone Napolitano, Lebanese hip hop, perverse rebetiko, tsifteteli funk... Styles deeply rooted in tradition, remixed, funked up, revisited or simply thrown raw on the dancefloor along gems of the new urban folk of previous decades. Clubbing has never been that fun before! |
Tuesday 22.05: MIDDLESEX FILM DEGREE SHOW followed by THAT open to public from 10pm - 2am; £5 |
|
LIVE: Man Like Me, The Anomalies (pic) DECKS: DJ Skull Juice + Phonica DJs
Middlesex University is holding their Film degree show until 10pm after which there will be live music and Djs for all courtesy of THAT.
The Anomalies aka MC Goldseal, Mouthmaster Murf, Lo and DJ Mayhem, have been making tunes together for the best part of 3 years, enjoying a varied bunch of impressive support slots on tour with prolific urban acts such as Grandmaster Flash, Goldie, Sway, Scratch Perverts, DJ Yoda, DJ First Rate, Roll Deep, Ugly Duckling and Groove Armada. They create their sound using a plethora of influences from swing and big band to reggae and old school hip hop. |
Wednesday 23.05: DEATH DISCO 6pm-2am, free before 8pm and £7 after |
|
DECKS: Alan McGee, Dan Devine, Chris Waks LIVE: Daniel Wylie (pic), The Cavaliers, Sex Panther
Alan McGee's and Dan Devine's weekly night has seen some incredible guest. In Danny and Alan's words: "Maybe The Guardian summed some of the clientele best by saying it is ...a haven for indie celebs and punk veterans. However we consider Death Disco the place to enjoy yourself.
Singer / songwriter Daniel Wylie was born and brought up in Glasgow, Scotland. He spent time writing and performing in numerous local bands, before going solo and subsequently founding the group Cosmic Rough Riders. Following a spell of writing and recording in the studio, a natural habitat for such a prolific songwriter, Daniel emerged with a unique collection of beautifully crafted songs, releasing his debut solo album 'Ramshackle Beauty' in 2004. The album received outstanding critical acclaim, and entered the top twenty of the official U.K. independent album charts. | | |
