Tons of thangz this week as usual and even more on the various sections of
IDMW.com, from extra releases that have appeared during the latest
WMC' period, a chat with Anglo-Danish outfit, Slow Train releasing their
debut-LP in France, our Single Of The Week (the reworks of "Can't Help Myself"
from Solu Music), our Album Of The Month (Mzansi House, an
impressive double-CD hailing from South African label, House Afrika to take the
world by storm), the latest Michael Procter's editorial to appear by the
beginning of next week and a new editorial series under The Politics Of
Dancing name. Not to mention more mixes soon to be online by the likes
of Chicagoan, Glenn Underground, L.A. band The Souplanet Jazz Ensemble
members, K.C. Santana & Jack Monforte
+ Canadian Inbeat record store, Christian
Pronovost. Welcome on board. Meanwhile, the IDM Family of
website partners is getting ready to welcome new members. Spread the word…
This issue#47 is to be our second instalment
focussing the latest newies that have emerged around the last Winter Music
Conference period, meanwhile we've just learned that Alan Smithee has
some more on offer on the footsteps of his famous alternative rework of
Natalie Cole's "Tell Me All About It" (more about this guy on a soon to be
printed interview). Also can reveal you the release date of the aforementioned's
"official" cover by Treena Rose on Jellybean Soul Recordings awaited on
Apr.22.
Get ready for some serious dope on Frankie
Feliciano Ricanstruction label. Following the footsteps of Nulife
featuring Kenny Bobien and Sterling Ensemble are the efficient and
abstract Mr V rework of Sole Channel's "Dope" reminiscent of some
old school flava and the soulful "Take Me To A Place" from Reel Soul
featuring Daemon which may well become a classic on its genre.
Not that far away from Ricanstruction's head style is the ultra fluid "E-Street-Beat"
from Ruffneck featuring Yavahn and most notoriously on it's Vocal Mix
(Soul Groove Records)
Former Distant NYC Music PR and DJette
Nicole Othero provides us with some interesting revamp of First Choice's
classic "Let No Man Put Asunder" with what we may call a sort of silky
progressive touch, to be a part of a new project released on Salsoul. Meanwhile,
DJ Romain goes for some more furious groove and in yer face beat on his
rework of "Love Having Your Around" for the same group (CD-R)
As a result to a trip to the West Coast,
Kenny Bobien has managed to make a stop by local producer Nikos,
giving bith to "Now That I Can See", the result of this meeting being of an
absolute soulful purity. Another corker to add to our brother who's on his way
to drop a remix double album before this summer confirming in the meantime the
growing dimension of Nikos productionwise (Under My Skin). Teaming up under the
East Los Soul, Gabriel Horizon & Aaron Arce come up with a
very nice swingalong jazz cut called "Luvn Feeln" featuring R&B vocalist
Malaysa. Would suggest U to have a listen to their gorgeous East Los Soul
Mix on the flipside melting latin percussions with much of deepness (Bounce
Muzik). Meanwhile 12:01 Project drops the phonkatmospheric "Look Around"
produced by Paul Zazadzee with a very Ananda Project-ish feel (Paradax
Records).
We're going up North and back to the East
Coast, In Chicago, where veteran Chez Damier resurfaces with the soulful
"Spiritual Wharfare EP" marking a fine return (TrackMode). Another particularily
well done tune is "Sunshine" from Aid To The Soulless seing the
participation of the ever in-demand vocalist Latrice Burnett ; an
infectious funky groove on its Edit Mix and 3° Ultra Lounge Mix versions
produced par the 3° posse. A cut we definitely should hear about by the time of
its official release. (CD-R). From Canada, 83 West label giving us another round
of their famous Duran Turik & Intense's "I Am" on a more classic &
soulful tip by the likes of Louis Benedetti doin' the remixes.
Got a whole bunch of bootlegs worth to mention
beginning with R&B singer Jesse Powell's "Something In The Past"
receiving another treatment from our man of the moment, Quentin Harris
adding another piece of beauty to his growing collection (Fallout). In that same
spirit, let'us add the ultra soulful Jamsteady vol.6 embellishing Musiq's
"Nothing At All". Intersting to mention is the first Bolshevik 12" featuring
Erykah Badu's "Bag Girl" revamped by the Basement Boys using a
skeleton taken from Nina Simone's classic "See Line Woman" as remixed by
Kerri Chandler & Jerome Sydenham. This one being also on offer on the
flipside + a very rare cut from Jerome Sydenham & Sten Gum called
"OO Inmissed". In other words, a good bargain ! Raze's classic "Break 4
Love" gets some deeper treatment as featuring on the Excursions… 007 series and
it's also fairly well done.
Hot on the heels of their rework of "The
Light" for Reel People and close to the official release of their much
awaited nu treatment for MAW's classic "I Can't Get No Sleep" on Defected,
Copyright have launched their own label, with a cut called "Running Away"
featuring Imaani using their (already) trademark touch. Meanwhile,
Joey Negro looks like going for another serious contender remixing Unit 2's
"Keep Your head Up To The Sky" with a sort of Roy Ayers feel. Better
check this limited edition, folks (Sole). Afro Art label looking like ready to
cause another stir on a more experimental front with the amazing Paul
Murphy/Marc Woolford Project's Jazz Room remixed by The Spiritual South
on a nu bossa feel (test).
Ending up with our newest IDM Family
german member, Ralph Gum who provides us with another goody called "What
I Like" featuring Inaya Day on a very friendly and classy phonky soul way
(GoGo Music). Get a break editorially speaking next week as Nu Groove's
columnist Irie takes my seat for some more breakologic adventures.
Peace
yall, MFSB
