ON TOUR: NOMO CONTINUE SUMMER TOUR
| |
NOMO’s roots are firmly planted in the fertile soil of African polyrhythm and American free jazz, and bandleader Elliot Bergman’s tracks draw inspiration from cultures and generations wildly different than his home setting. Detroit producer Warren Defever (His Name Is Alive) was charged with capturing the band’s live energy, and he shaped the sounds for maximum impact. New Tones, released last year on Ubiquity Records is a full-color, spiritual soundscape that marries the exotic with the gritty.
WHAT CRITICS HAD TO SAY ABOUT NOMO'S 'NEW TONES':
"A fusion of strutting funk, slinky Afro-beat rhythms and the leftfield tones of homemade instruments, the sound of Michigan ensemble NOMO is an ecstatic and organic groove, striking a balance between the rapture of Konono No.1's buzzing mbiras and Tortoise's brainy instrumental compositions.” - PLAYBOY
"This Detroit-area Afrobeat band makes huge strides on its second album... The funky music of Fela Kuti remains NOMO's bedrock, but the octet now carefully integrates soul riffs, jazz-flavored solos, and more instruments" - CHICAGO READER
"If you're a fan of Antibalas, Daktaris, Tortoise, YNQ and post-Fela funkiness, then this should fit very nicely in your get-up-and-dance collection." - STRAIGHT NO CHASER

Orgone first appeared on Ubiquity with their cover of “Funky Nassau” on Rewind Volume 4 and are now signed to deliver their first full-length album. Their excellent vinyl releases on the UK-based Nuff Rope label have been faves with DJs worldwide, including NYC’s Danny Krivit who liked “Funky Nassau” so much he offered up one of his legendary re-edits. The band’s reputation is backed-up by an impressive resume including landing a spot in an Adidas campaign. They’ve been backing band to The Pharcyde, Plantlife (including an Australian tour with James Brown and BBC performance for Jools Holland), Tone Loc, and New Orleans funk legend Eddie Bo at the Hurricane Katrina benefit. Members of Orgone also feature in the make-up of Ubiquity acts Connie Price and Breakestra and perform regularly at the Root Down in LA.
