We
at IDMW.com are very proud to introduce you to the so called Alan
Smithee. Not only because, as opposed to his numerous homonyms in the
history of US movie, he has signed what to us is the track of this year's
Conference in Miami. But also and despite the fact that he's done a bootleg and
therefore might be the subject to lawsuit, he has fully assumed his position
while deciding to respond to our curiosity. This said and as a matter of
elementary principle, don't count on us to reveal you anything about his real
identity… words : MFSB
Who's Alan Smithee ?
Alan Smithee is a more of a “what”… Let us explain : a moniker used back in the
1930’s as anonymous name credit for directors who'd done bad movies. The name is
public domain, and so it was turned to use with music as an experiment to see if
the dance masses would catch on…..We at Blue Blackness didn’t expect anyone to
receive us in such a good way. Alan has now turned into more than one person in
the collaboration of projects within our camp.
Why Blue Blackness ?
My partner was the one that came up with the Blue Blackness concept because
everything from his computer to his vehicle is black, and everything I like
usually ends up in the color of blue, hence, “blue blackness”…
Not
that many people doing what is usually known as bootleg accept to answer some
questions. Would it mean that this 12" is a sort of appetizer (call this a
teasing if you prefer) for some further official project ? Could it be that it
is to be included on the next volume of Verve Remixed ? An album project of
yours recycling some standards from the past ?
Definitely appetizer material, sort of like introducing a new drink that I make
at parties called “Every Hour On The Hour”. Included on Verve ? It would be a
dream come true if they wanted this. They have so much good remixes out on jazz
greats like Billie Holiday and Sarah Vaughn.
Heard about that Treena Rose "official cover" to be released on Jellybean by
the end of April ?
I’m ashamed to admit I have not a clue who Treena Rose is, let alone know much
about Jellybean. I’m sure they’re hot. My partner would know. (smile)
Don't you fear of being sued by the singer herself you used the voice of –
Natalie Cole - or the record company where this has been released on some
previous version ?
Oh we’re definitely wary of the risks involved here, but to risk nothing is to
gain nothing. Once again, hence the name Alan Smithee…
I come to understand that you have some other projects in the same vein. A
few words about them ?
Let’s just say that according to sources, “we have lost our minds” in a good way.
That is, and there are few things up our sleeves….
Looks like "Blue Blackness" isn't the first one from you ? What was/were the
previous one(s)?
Not sure on who the previous was, although it’s our first as Alan Smithee in
Blue Blackness…
Did you expect such an enthusiasm around this release ?
We really didn’t and it’s so surreal to us. We keep humble and do the work to
continue to hopefully touch lives and hearts.
Looks like you have already a sort of trademark? Is this what is indeed
needed on a period where too many thangz sound alike ?
Very much so. Different is definitely what’s needed in a sound alike arena of
dance tracks. As much as we want to fit in and be part of the norm, we end up
being the unusual, yet the masses wanted even more.
Your influences ? Your background ? Your aim(s) ?
Influences, hmm……Fingers Inc., Todd Edwards, A Guy Called Gerald, St. Germain,
Blaze, Naked Music, Om, R&B, jazz, just to name some. Have to send you the list
as far as background, been involved in a lot of projects, too many to list here.
Goals are to become “superproducers” and do this thing we call “the dance” 24/7
and not have to worry about a 9 to 5.
Your current environment ? Do you DJ as well ?
Full studio set up – ya’ know, the mixer keyboard-drummachine with full-blown
computer type setup. We definitely DJ as well.
How do you see the current house scene ?
Kinda hard to answer that, cause we stay soo crammed in the studio crankin tunes
almost left and right; Lemme get back to you on that (lol).
House Music doesn't have the exposure it should have? Any explanation? What
should be done ?
Explanation ? One word : “clearchannel” – telecommunications empire that owns
over 64% of the radio, TV, and advertisment companies here in the U.S. They tell
the jocks what to play on air, and so, house music in the mainstream always take
a backseat or gets lost in the shuffle.
