OPEN YOUR EYES…
In the beginning, there was Paradise… (*) A NYC spot which would come to be nominated as the #1 on the Club Hit 100 by the readers of UK publication DJ (Magazine) almost 10 years after shutting. Strange at first sight, but definitely no coincidence…
A close friend of mine said to me one day: There’s nothing like sharing! And I guess that’s pretty much the sparkle which has led me to become who I am along the years, using any kind of tool, from a couple of decks and a mixer to a review on a publication or the concept of a compilation, to express what I believe to be right. Besides, let’s not forget how the basic idea of a club – the primarly form of which appeared in England more than 2 centuries ago – was the reunion of people having matters of interest in common. This being quite far if not the opposite – and I guess many of you will agree - to what may be experienced nowadays when going to a vaste majority of those places known as… nightclubs!
Disco, as the birthplace of the said (contemporary) dance music, was more than a genre. It was A vibe, it was A state of mind and it soon became A way of thinking, not to say of living. And its undeniable strength was that ANYONE could become a part of it, regardless the colour of his skin, sexual inclination or professional situation with no real fuss by the likes of the doormen…
As a result, having Paradise Garage co-founder Mel Cheren today being paid a tribute as the Godfather Of Disco in a documentary of the name directed by Gene Graham – this week's feature – comes as no surprise, celebrating the work of a man who’s devoted his whole life to the idea of sharing, as notoriously illustrated by his contribution to the LIFEbeat foundation.
Music is the message & love is the answer… I guess you Mel coudn’t find better words as a dedication when givin’ me a copy of your book! MFSB
