JON LUCIEN: A VOICE HAS GONE…
It’s with a great sadness that we’ve happened to be reported about the passing of R&B/jazz singer Jon Lucien on the morning of 08/18/2007 of respiratory failure and other complications.
Born in the Carribean Islands – in Tortola to be more precise – on 08/01/1942, Lucien made a name for himself while managing to create unique atmospheres, not only with the textures and the colours of his music made of a subtle blend of jazz, R&B, Carribean and Brazilian vibes, but also an instantly recognizable voice like other unforgettable names such as Barry White, Johnny Bristol, Larry Graham and Terri Callier.
Despite a strong legacy – leaving classics such as ‘Would You Believe In Me’ released in 1973 then rerecorded 20 years later as a part of the Mother Nature’s Son album, he never really got the status his awesome talent deserved, leading him to take a break for a few years in the 80’s before makin’ a return in 1991 with the Listen Love album on Mercury followed by the latest prior signing with Shanachie after another 4 years hiatus.
Although never really geared towards the various forms of dance music, he would come to the attention of the UK groove headz on a couple of occasions, alongside Mucho Macho but also Block 16 as a guest vocalist on the Nuphonic released ‘Morning Sun’ 12’’ in 2001.
Let’s hope he’s endly got back by the side of his late daughter, Dalila who died on a flight crash in July 1996.
So long Jon. God bless your soul, MFSB
