| Thursday 30.08: YOYO
6pm-2am, free B4 8pm, £5 b4 11pm and £7 after |
|
|
LIVE: Deadly Hunter, Nsg, Kennedy (pic) DECKS: residents Seb Chew, Leo Greenslade
Resident DJs Seb Chew and Leo Greenslade's block party mix of 80's boogie, upfront hip hop, hard funky mash-ups and RnB rarities has made YOYO one of the best hip hop parties around. It's also the favorite hang out spot for Kanye West, Faith Evans and DJ to the stars Mark Ronson.
NSG is no ordinary urban musician. Born in Indonesia, Nutyas Surya Gumilang (NSG) migrated to the UK at the age of 10. Growing up in a diverse corner of Hackney, surrounded by the sounds of East London's grime and Hip Hop scene he soon found he could produce spot on beats. In the space of 2 years NSG had developed from a total beginner into a musician of exceptional ability. His performances blend digital music and organic live music. The boundaries of urban music are changing and NSG is likely to be seen as a key element of this in years to come... Also playing live are Deadly Hunter and Kennedy |

In the past few months the Communion has attracted everyone from The Killers, Cast and the Stereophonics to Alan McGee and Suede, as well as the usual crowd who are finely tuned into the zeitgeist the arts club personifies. Hosted by much talked about band Hot Rocket, September's Communion features live music from the brilliant Captain Phoenix, JJ Pistolet, Beans on Toast, Peggy Sue and the Pirates, You and Me as well as Hot Rocket themselves. The party doesn't stop after the bands have finished- DJs include You and Me, Mat Osman (Suede) and a secret DJ, as well as visuals supplied by Rowena True (Kill All Hippies). On the first Sunday of every month, Communion has it's own unique vibe and won't be one of London's best kept secrets for much longer. |
Monday 03.09 DIVE 6pm-1am, free before 8pm, £5 after |
|
LIVE: Kojo, Kill Electric (pic), Atticus Blond, Drew Walker, Larsen B DECKS: DLB
Dive is our new bastard bass driven Monday night featuring a veritable line up of those hearing and playing the radio waves of tomorrow.
The trans-Atlantic four-piece Kill Electric is the result of ongoing coincidences that have brought together a group whose instinctive musical cohesion has been as exciting as the way they came to be. Kill Electric are based and inspired by London. Its streets and people are the main characters in their songs and the daily struggle of living in London features heavily in their lyrics. Although Tye is the only native Londoner, the other members have adopted the city as their own; their hand-to-mouth existence made tolerable by its people's energy and by the life-long dreams one can fulfill there. The citys history and musical heritage is why they came and why they will remain. Formed in late 2006 at the heart of the london session scene, Kojo are a melting pot of scintillating 80's pop, funk, soul & rock. Kojo are Chaun (vocals), Sol (bass/vocals), Craig (drums) and Chris (guitar). In a music scene saturated with Indie bands, Kojo are fast becoming the pioneers of a fresh 'n funky new sound. Also playing are deamy songer/songwriter Atticus Blond, Drew Walker and Larsen B |
Tuesday 04.09: SWEET MEMORY SOUNDS LIVE 7pm-2am, free before 8pm and £5 after |
|
DECKS: DJ Derek (pic), Tom Murray, Adam Callan LIVE:No.1 Station, Bobby Kray, 8Fold
Sweet Memory Sounds prides itself in providing quality music both on stage on from the decks. This month we boast three awesome live acts as well as the resident DJs - including DJ Derek, whose incredible presence at festivals and clubs over the years has afforded him the status of Legend.
DJ Derek's status as Legend is well deserved. He is now in his mid 60's and at the top of his game. Armed with a Jamaican patois that defies his Bristolian roots and nearly 30,000 ska, reggae, dancehall and soul tracks to choose from, this old man is one of the UK's musical treasures. No. 1 Station are the vanguards of a new generation of Blue Beat - the generic name given to Jamaican music in Britain in the 1960's. Playing authentic Ska, Rocksteady, and Reggae in the way it was originally intended. Fronted by bluebeat legend Sir Marcus Downbeat. Bobby Kray is known as something of a reggae wunderkind. Fesh from supporting Ziggy Marley on the UK leg of his world tour he also set the stage alight at Glastonbury this year and has been spreading the word of his talent all over the UK from his humble beginning in Ladbroke Grove. Formed in 2003, 8Fold have already established a strong fan base with their unique self named genre of music, 'Carpet Funk'. Based on heavy hip hop beats, mixing in 70s funk vibes, with up tempo dance grooves, they have been wowing audiences all over the UK. |
Wednesday 05.09: DEATH DISCO 6pm-2am, free before 8pm and £7 after |
|
DECKS: Alan McGee, Dan Devine, Chris Waks LIVE: The Sessions (pic), Liquid Sunshine, Eastroad, Nelson
Alan McGee's and Dan Devine's weekly night has seen some incredible guest. In Danny and Alan's words: "Maybe The Guardian summed some of the clientele best by saying it is ...a haven for indie celebs and punk veterans. However we consider Death Disco the place to enjoy yourself.
The Sessions cite Jimi Hendrix, The Wailers, Primal Scream, The Stooges, Marvin Gaye, Bill Withers, Gil Scott Heron amongst others as their influences. We reckon come and find out for yourself! | | |
