YOUR HOUSE OR MINE???
After 11 years, as the best disco in town, the Paradise Garage will throw its final party on this September 26, said co-owner of the club Michael Brody, because of protests from the Soho community which have kept his lease from being renewed. Eurgh… Could this be that we’ve all become crazee here on IDMW??? Naaaah, as this is most likely what you might have read on these pages, supposing we’ was already around back in… 1987!
20 years have gone since leavin’ the souvenir of the 84 King St. located club firmly in the memories of a whole generation of partygoers. But also a key question as far as today’s scene is concerned: Is it all it was???
No need sayin’, unless for the attention of those who’d have been spendin’ the 2 last decades livin’ in a desert island, how things have changed inbetween in an unpreceeding way! And I guess none of us at the time could have predicted such a transformation, even though we could already feel the signs of an ongoing (r)evolution back then.
Of course, those of you actually in their 20’s/30’s might pretty well point out the fact that this period was the one of the so called Happy Days (refering to the famous US TV series of the name) to the previous generation, with those being a part of it – incl. yours truly – more or less the subjects of a certain nostalgia.
Of course, let’s not neither forget about a period most likely seen as a pioneering era to be somehow compared to the conquest of the West and the unevitable fantasies that come with.
Of course, one might say how everything’s relative at the end of the day with the difference from a gramophone to the famous Garrard 401 those of us DJing in the mid 70’s where using at the time being sort of comparable with the one from the latest to a current pro CD player. Not to say a digitalized mixin’ tool such as the Traktor for instance!!!
This said… What have we done of this heritage since??? No need neither sayin’ how big is the shock generated by the countless changes which have occured from a period to another, almost putting the 70’s/80’s to the rank of prehistory, as the values that were predominent at the time. Can we reasonably see as a wish come true some prefabricated DJ with the support of heavy marketing being considered (and subsequently treated) as a superstar while puttin’ out music made by someone else? Party promoters exhibiting a few years ago someone sucking his d… as a part of their show in Ibiza in front of 100’s of teenagers? True artists seing their incomes drastically decrease when some Internet providers build their subscription campaign on unlimited free download process as a part of their services in the mean time? And the list goes on… Leavin’ this to your own appreciation as to what what we’re currently livin’ will be left to the coming generations.
As to those who, by their contribution or lack or reaction, are the obvious supporters of that, better tell them: This might be your house, definitely not mine! MFSB
