3 GENERATIONS WALKING…
Or rather soon to be 3… refering to the age of artists who, despite already in their 50’s, not to say their 60’s, keep on expressing their art in front of people in the position to be not only their contemporaries, but also kidz when not grand kidz !!! With a quintessential question: what makes ‘em last so long?
The current return of Police on stage after 20 years of absence… But also the Sex Pistols 3 UK date (at the mo) reunion tour by the middle of November as a celebration to the 30th B-Day of their Never Mind The Bollocks album release. In addiction to the more or less 25 million enquiries received in order to attend Led Zeppelin’s charity concert due to take place on 11/26 in London… Uh-uh!!! Anotha reason to think we’ve definitely fallen under craziness here on IDMW??? Not that much, knowing that a whole bunch of DJ’s like E-Man (this past month) or Tony Humphries (during the next Southport Weekender) have turned on their 50’s or are on their way to do so. Not to mention the return of funk diva Chaka Khan with her recently released Funk This album with its explosive 1st ‘Disrespectful’ single offshot as brilliantly remixed by Matthias Heilbronn!!! And the list goes on, from Stevie Wonder to Roy Ayers, Vincent Montana Jr and George Benson to name a few…
Sort of ironical, one might think at first sight, in this current environment dominated by unceasing prefabricated sensations, to see how the souvenir may last, and eventually be transmitted from a generation to another, in regards to people who were already around from 20 to… 50 years ago, as funk outfit the Isley Brothers who made their debut in… 1958! A vibrant proof to say the least as to how the marketing and its latest developments hasn’t achieved so far erasin’ the souvenir of those who, by their contributions, have made our heritage what it is, despite the support of heavy finances! I mean, c’mon: what would be life without… soul??? And I’m not talkin’ about the so called musical genre/style but more of the spirit thinkin’ about what would become many entreprises once their originators have gone, from Berry Gordy’s Motown label to Frankie Crocker’s WBLS or José Padilla’s Cafe Del Mar series of comp and the list looks endless…
Not content with being gifted, these people remain firmly in mind for havin’ like no other been the witnesses of the time going along those last decades, as opposed to the continuous flock of fashonable toys surfing from a wave to another which have progressively invaded our daily environment since the beginning of the eighties, putting music to the rank of instant consumption product. In other words, miles away from its initial goal/status as an expression form of the art, itself being a derivation of the reality.
Time tends to show how the strongest musical movements have drawn their roots out of some of the key chapters of the ongoing transformation of our societies. From blues to jungle, rock to (acid) house, reggae to punk, Afro beat to disco, funk to hip hop and the likes. Each of them with their own codes and subsequent translations both in terms of visual and scenic attitude contributing to enforce their respective identities. Once again, as opposed to today’s prefabrication process with no real foundation except the will to stuck to the air of the present mood and nothing more…
Existence, unlike what’s widely shown if not promoted on the major TV’s, is an amalgamation of successive ups & downs, being the cradle of both maturity and artistry, itself resulting in its ability to translate them and being the blatant proof of some remaining humanity in our world. MFSB
