MICA PARIS
Young Soul Rebels
Big Life |
The fact of havin’ most of the major companies HQ’s based in their own country has no doubt been of a help in establishing the Americans’ supremacy on the so called box office. Is it to say no one could do better than them as far as music (among others) is concerned? A quick look back in the History tends to show how the Brits have regularly managed to come up with serious arguments, such as during the Brit soul era back at the end of the eighties with acts such as Soul II Soul, Loose Ends or the Young Disciples to name a few, with the advantage of offering new perspectives due to a different background. A fact which fully applies as well to the cinema and more particularly here to local director Isaac Julien who was to make his debut with Young Soul Rebels in 1991. Alas, if his film failed getting a real exposure (due to various reasons), its soundtrack was worth a listen, with music by the likes of Parliament, Junior Marvin, the late Sylvester and X-Ray Specs. Not to mention the ultra talented Mica Paris on the title track. As fresh as it was back in the days with some real emphasis in the horns and strings arrangements by the likes of producer Juni Morrison and a remix courtesy of Paul Waller. MFSB
