JOHNNY 'GUITAR' WATSON
Superman Lover
DJM Records |
Another quintessential man in the history of modern groove is undoubtedly the late Johnny ‘Guitar’ Watson. A bluesman born in Houston, Tx in 1935 whose long carreer (he died in May 1996) would be for much in the development of blues, but also soul, funk and eventually rap. Not only a guitarist, but a multi-instrumentist, playin’ both organ, synths, bass guitar, pianos, congas and drums as if it wasn’t enough, Watson was also a damn good singer. We catch him here in 1976 with the incredible ‘Superman Lover’ taken from his Ain’t That A Bitch album, considered as a landmark recording of 70’s funk but also quite previewing of where rap music would find its food with in yer face lyrics. A cut which would eventually find a new life 23 years later on under the form of Chico Debarge featuring Redman’s ‘Soopaman Lover’ released on Motown.MFSB
