There’s most likely a time – as a piece of music – for everything. So rather than fillin’ you up with some endless list of everything (and God knows how we’ve been provided with newies over the last couple of weeks), we’ve put ourselves into the skin of a selector awaited to deliver vibes regarding the different periods of the day. The first to appear in the series being none other but what we’ll file under some unlikely Poolside Sunsetters section…
WMC’08 - POOLSIDE SUNSETTERS (CHILLIN' VIBES, COOL BEATS & OTHER ILLICIT GROOVES...)
To me, ain’t probably nothing like that specific transition period bringing from the light of the day to the dark of the night. Be it while bein’ graced with one of those vibrant blends by the likes of José Padilla back in the day @ Café Del Mar in Ibiza. Or in Miami, relaxin’ with friends around a pool under a revitalizing breathe comin’ from the sea and the necessary cool vibes supposed to come with… Yup folks, it’s like that ; those who know will tell you how there’s nothing like a fine appetizer to jump on a good meal!!!
Senses, harmony, intimism, not to forget rhythm are the main ingredients to be found on the selection thereafter… D’you come with?
If ever there’s one language synonymous with sea, senses (yeah I guess I hear what you think of!!!) and sun, it’s definitely Brazilian and per extension Portuguese. She was born in France but spent her childhood in Mozambique before fulfillin’ her dreams while goin’ to… Brazil. I discovered her incidently while comin’ from a page to another on Myspace and have been instantly by her grace. She said to me she doubted bein’ in the position to interest what she felt as being the audience of IDMW, this meaning you. So to make yourself an idea, just check her page and feel free to make yourself an idea then eventually drop her a line. And oops by the way, her name is Clarisse Albrecht and we deliver you a snippet of her latest song called ‘Você me da’ with the hope you’ll enjoy as we do…
By the time readin’ those lines, the ears of some of the luckiest of you currently in Miami might have been graced with and incredible piece of art in all senses of the term. ‘Blue And Deep’, that’s the title of this most awaited new production courtesy of Jephté Guillaume, as an opener to a whole album for Berlin hailing opera female singer Wiltrud Weber. Although somehow suprising at first sight the meeting between those 2 people comin’ from totally different cultures is litteraly off the hook puttin’ both the said classical lyrism and the Latino-Caribbean heritage into an unsuspected dimension. Official release awaited in the next comin’ weeks as said to me by Jephté himself (Advance/CD-R).
Those of you familiar with our pages since almost day 1 might remember our very first coverage of the WMC under the IDMW banner back in 2004. We came back litteraly graced by Australian female singer Treena Rose with her cover version of the Michael Franks penned classic ‘Tell Me All About It’ which we welcomed as our Single Of The Week back then. Whatever happened to the lady in question ? This, I dunno, but almost 4 years later, here we go with another unofficial version of the latest finely revamped by that man named Mr Cubanix puttin’ it into even deeper grounds. Will this ever be released? Fingers crossed although nothing looks like confirmed at the mo’. Quite tempting to establish a link with the aptly titled ‘Breath Away’ appearin’ like THE 2008 soundtrack as far as the poolside chillin’ sessions are concerned. A cut which marks the return in full effect of veteran producer Todd Gardner under the Djed moniker alongside female singer Gynisse Way speakin’ of which it definitely looks like more should be heard in the future (Certified Organik). Sounding already like a classic is the incredible revamp of Andy Tamashi featuring Victoria T’s ‘The Meaning Of Love’ by that much in demand Tony Loreto adding much grace to this song while givin’ more room to the classy interpretation of the lady with wicked keys and a rumblin’ bassline over spacey rhythm arrangements (Consortium Muzik). The latest adding a new absolute piece of heaven to his credit, sharing the remix duties with Abicah Soul on Kenny Carvajal featuring Swaylo’s ‘You Remind Me’ due for imminent release on Phuture Sole. The result being, you’ve guessed it, unmissable with the lady sounding more emotive than ever!
Only the best… No time for the rest! Pretty looks like Abicah Soul has made our slogan his over the last weeks/month with an unceasing flow of productions/post-productions on a nearly weekly basis! Remixing both Harold Brandon’s ‘Happiness’, DJ Jalal featuring Carolyn Victorian & Ovina Gregory’s ‘Strength Of A Man’ and Andy Tamashi featuring Victoria T’s ‘What’s The Meaning Of Love’ for Consortium Muzik in that fine style which is definitely his. But also producing the UN-missable ‘Kora’ alongside Master Kev on for Iwanai. As many investments heavily suggested. Been deadly graced by Stephen Rigmaiden who’s sent a whole bunch of upcoming projects for labels such as Devotion and Seasons Limited to name a few speakin’ of which you’ll be given further developments as time goes. Can’t resist though speakin’ of his magnificient revamp of SR2 featuring Kem’s ‘Without You’. A brilliant piece of contemporary jazzy soul with a rare feelin’ of intimacy which would really deserve an official release. Another corker which we’d like to warmly welcome here on IDMW is Alton Miller’s newie ‘Together’ due to be made available by the middle of next month on Seed Recordings… Just been sent the Demo Mix so far but it pretty looks like our long time Detroit-based brother has one of those infectious choons destined to blow the minds of the soulful headz. More to come soon on these pages with a soon to be posted extended review.
From the Melodious Sampler Promo Mix LP which is actually our Album Of The Month, Big Ed & cohorts deliver a listener’s digest of awesome grooves, beginning with the smooth and vibrant ‘Love Shined’ to be credited to The BBN featuring K. Lawdawn as remixed by Sean McCabe. Remember when you’ve heard dis first!!! On a slightly higher tempo and although released a (little) while ago, can’t resist mentioning the deep’n’jazzy ‘North 5th Street Serenade’ by the likes of Brothers Vibe dislayin’ and instant feel-good peaceful feeling with its Ibanez sounding guitar solo over Latinesque percussions (Mixx Records). And the same ought to be said of Wil Milton’s ‘District 30’ quite reminiscent of that unforgettable Alleviated Records sound back in the beginning of the 90’s. In other words… deep, smooth and jazzy with a subtle emphasis resulting in that special blend of aerial vibraphone play over aerial keys (Blak Ink). Freshly squeezed by Chicago-based label Unified Records as a part of their latest delivery on Traxsource, DJ Aakmael comes up with the transporting ‘Feel It’ graced with wicked keys over vocal parts by a female singer who, for some reason, hasn’t been credited although showin’ a really interesting side and therefore deserving far more than remaining in the shadow.
On a somehow darker side or rather say more melancholic vein comes the atmospheric synthesized ‘Breathe So’ by Said-So opening the credits for new imprint Soul Candi White. Meanwhile Deeper Shades of House head Lars Behrenroth gives birth to his own label with the lascive and moody ‘Yes Smoke’ by jojoflores and Joe DiPadova (Deeper Shades Recordings). Another heavily suggested worth the listen cut is ‘I Can’t Pretend’ produced by Dave Campbell with a vibrant not to say plaintive interpretation by female singer Sacha at her absolute peak, marking the winning return of the Shines stable after a nearly 6 month hiatus. Not that many releases on a yearly period from London stable Need 2 Soul but most likely absolute necessary pieces of art. The recently released ‘Rize’ with production work by the likes of Glenn Underground in addition to the smooth & silky vocal performance by Daisy Villa makin’ - as most of us may guess - NO exception.
Long time hadn’t heard of Sun Orchestra. This bringing us back to the early days of Franck Roger alongside former partner in crime Jerome Batistelli. Quite some time has gone since with the latest obviously more geared towards nu jazz/2step vibes. At first sight, doesn’t look like this is a remix. So is it say that the association is to be resurrected??? Far from being 100% positive, added to the fact that this cut has been recorded 6 years ago. Anyway, this ‘Forever’ titled piece of smokin’ deep jazz is a pure delight with both our men, Olivier MSellem playin’ the Rhode and Playin’ For The City sax player Loïk Gayot displayin’ a serious proof of savoir faire together. This seeming like a perfect conclusion as far as this selection is concerned (Franck Roger Digital). MFSB
