“Immo EP“
Q-Tape Records
Aie, aie, aie… What another true potential
this is, should it receive the appropriate welcome it no doubt reserves. Can
already imagine a full range of people from Ron Trent to Russ Dewburry,
Kerri Chandler, DJ Spinna, Joe Claussell, Osunlade
and the likes rockin’ like hell to this. Behind the desks, a relatively new name
— Bruno Hovart — hailing from Lyon, France who, as Detroit’s Malik
Alston, looks like having many hats on his head as shown on this 5
tracker-EP. The title track (my absolute favourite in fact) melts afro, jazz,
funk and rare groove elements around what seems more of some scatt vocal riffs,
bringing us back to the good ol’daze of hi-life jazz/makossa with a deep touch.
But wait a minute, as the rest of this EP also deserves mention, including the
original version of the deep and jazzy “Corn Bread“ + 2 stunning remixes delving
in the same deep spectrum although with a different approach. The first one, by
Crusho, being what we could expect from a collaboration between Roy Ayers
and say Kaidi Tatham. The second one, by Sylvester Over, going straight
to the abyss of some kinda abstract repetitive disco jazz funk territories.
