It's not a problem
that I can't fix, coz' I can do it…
IN DA MIX
Mid apr already. Funny how time flyes. Nearly
on month from the latest WMC' and still tons of choons to drop an ear at. You
are already a 1,000 to receive this piece of shit as there are more and more of
you everyday asking to get it. Well, it's not a problem… And for the rest, you
know the score, as you just have to drop me a few lines in return, should you
like to see some more of us delivered what you read now. This reminding me
Yellorange's motto : United we stand ! And, lucky enuff as we got internet to
get stronger together.
What will tomorrow bring ? Dis, I dunno, but
one thang is for sure : the one who does nutin' doesn't get anything in return !
Dis said, let's go straight 2 the subject that makes our common interest :
Plastic in its most emotional form !
One time is not for use, let's begin this
Issue ≠ 05 with some long formats. Got da chance to get an ear on Dwele's
debut as I interviewed him last week for Coda and this looks like a
masterpiece. A gorgeous collection of deep soul songs that should put this young
man from Detroit – remember his works with Slum Village ? – under the
spotlights alongside people like D'Angelo, Maxwell and Donnie
(prepare to order a copy as Subject – that's its title – hits the streets
the third week of may on Virgin). For music lovers indeed, as is london female
duet Floetry with also a first album entiteld Floetic that has
been recorded in Philly with the likes of Jazzy Jeff and cohorts (A
Touch Of Jazz) behind the desks (Dreamworks). Another sensation is
Micatone with its second collection called Is You Is, coming from
Jazzaonva's label Sonar Kollektiv. A five-piece band rollin' on some cool
jazzy landscapes with a drop of funky groove around the particular
interpertations of Lisa Bassenger in a style that reminds somehow those
great female voices inherited from the 50's/60's jazz on Blue Note, as
epitomized by "Plastic Bags & Magazines". Remember Rise Ashen's
"Second Wind" on Bombay last year ? Well, the young canadian guy is back on his
own label (Fossifuel) with an album – {Earth Dragon} – full of various
goodies, twisting afro, middle east, dub, reggae, soul, broken beat and hip hop
flavas. A rather pertinent collection indeed (more info :
www.fossifuel.ca). And that's f**** about da same regarding Mitchell
& Dewbury's first entitled Rapping With The Goos (thank you Nik
for persisting sending me good muzak month after month). Waow, what a
universe those two brits have managed to create : deep, atmopheric vibes in a
chill-out kinda vein that, no doubt, will find its niche this summer at spots
like Cafe del Mar in Ibiza and the likes. And I've just taken the time to listen
to the first two songs so far (Mumo Records) ! A collection that undoubtly
smells the summer as Sambaloco Brazilian Drum'N'Bass Classics does
indeed, for those interested into some nu x-periences, melting soul, jazz and…
latin vibes on some subtle drum & bass patterns (more info :
www.trama.com.br). And that
shoud be the same (I mean the sunny flavas) regarding the new 'Little' Louie
Vega's album, awaited anytime now (watch this space !).
We have a new bag of interesting 12 inches 4 U this week. Cool, cool, cool are
the new versions of Solu Music featuring
KimBlee's "Naturally" subtly retouched by Blaze. Not that I don't
like the singer but i very much prefer the instrumental version that drives us
into some very contemplative territories with its atmospheric keyboars playing
and a drop of spanish guitar over a phat bassline (Solu Music). Cool, cool, cool
too, with what makes it (smart) trademark is Dennis Ferrer's relifting of
"I Got Sunshine" from Patrick Green featuring B'klyn Red. Expect to find
the very best there from a man that melts like no other soulful music with afro/brazilian
rhythms (Innervibe Music). And the sun keeps on comin' with the joyous and
aerial "Taste The Wine" from Ms Alto on a jazzy afro tip what is probably
the best release to date to come out of newly formed Slang label. Never heard
about Joël ? Say wot ! Nope ??? Guess dis won't be long anymore before
this guy gets straight in ya face, and more effectively if you're into
soul/jazz/funk fusion. Check out his newest "Won't Take No" with its retro horns
riffs around some afro vocal tones B4 some bridge à la Earth, Wind & Fire (Electric
Monkey). No surprised to see that Giant Step NYC has promoed it. Is this still
house ? Who cares !
At least is the following one. I mean this
"No One Else" song by AK with japanese lyrics as revamped by Jon
Cutler with the addiction of flute supremo, Brian Jackson. Nuf' said
?(King Street). If there's a name to be watched in terms of deep house with an
effective swing along, it's definitely the don of Distant Music as he proves it
on his own label with his nu production "Alone" featuring Luna. In
comparaison, DJ Romain gets into a more dancefloor trip with "Sweet Joy"
under his new Soul City moniker featuring the vocals of Jacqué ;
and more specially on his Dub Mix, twisting some progressive elements
with a gospel organ line on a funky groove (Wave).
Time to leave the Big Apple as we reach the
sunny shores of Florida with some Soulfuric new flavas. Into the jazzy kind of
stuff twisted with a bit of filter and ambient cutz ? Well Richard
Earnshaw's "Joyride" should do it, more precisely with its Dub Version
while B4ing somewhere in a bar or club at the early hourz of da nite, and even a
bite later if U +2 pitch it ! In the same kind of current club vein as
trademarked by Srs Tappert & Pomeroy's label, is Mambana's
newie "Libre" with some latin feel to push a bit the steamer. And a some soulful
tip comes the monstruous "Keep On Movin'" with its compact bass/rhythm line from
Naked Soul featuring Consuela Ivy (Piratebrain Records). This, leading us
to the other sunny side of US ( California of course !) with a really vibrant
Siesta Music tchoon : the abstractjazzyatmospheric "Deep Underground" by
Charlie Brown & That Kid Adam with a bit of melancholy somehow. A bit
smoother is the Deepest Mix version of "Raindrops" by Deep Swing
presents Audio Philes, enlightened by a flute solo over some absorbing
bassline (Generate Music). Although three remixers have been comissioned to
revamp it, nothing equals the original version of the sweet soulful "Arms Around
You" by Nymphonix on a slightly deeper mood than the famous Naked Music
sound. A cut also worth to check out if you're into that typical californian
kind of vibe (Celebrity). Our very last stop this week will be Nikos & Sache's
"Supernatural Healing", a housey cool tempo lead by the vocals of O'Nita
Hutton who proves to be a real diva, and an infectious sax line.
That's all folks ! Goin' back next week, stay
tuned !
MFSB
Errata : Last week was a mention about a cut
from Sun Orchestra that Wave has licensed with some remix 2 come from Matthias
Heilbronn. Well, it's "Driftin'" and not "Runnin'" as said. Apologizes for the
ones concerned.
