Get ready for some more from our
own MFSB in the weeks to come as 2004 marks his 30th year… in da mix ! No
less that three decades that saw him spinning from Europe to America and Africa,
championning the various colours of the groove.
What you're gonna get on this section is a series of numerized mixtapes that
he's done throughout the years, should it be early house, R&B, disco, downtempo,
soul funk and the likes…
Could it be that 1988 was the very last year where dance music was considered as
a whole, including those new forms of expression like house, techno alongside
R&B, soul, acid jazz and the kitchen sink ??? Well, the DJ's at the time were
able to provide us with some real versatility as opposed to a vast majority of
today's ones. This mixtape # 06 is another true exemple of what would be around
at the time seing the nightclubbers torn into various directions.
Considered as the best press reviewer of all the times by our own MFSB,
the late Guy Hamilton pointed out some interesting point on a social
point of view. For him, the evident division that emerged at the time in UK
between North and South were you was able to listen to different sounds was
notjhing but the result of UK's industrial structures. People in the North under
recession would listen to some harder rhythms when their Southern counterpart
with a far more comfortable economical situation would go for some softer
rhythm. Well, it was said that a trio of producers – Stock, Aitken & Waterman
– would stand aside from these considerations gaining some 60% of the singles
sales the following year with their unique formula, should it be for Kylie
Minogue, Jason Donovan, Mel & Kim, Princess and
a whole bunch of pop waanbes, not to mention Rick Astley. Meanwhile, one
of the most respected UK group throughout the world – Loose Ends – was
trying to break America. On the other end, it was the beginning of the end for
Shalamar, a trademark of SOLAR label's boss Dick Griffey deserted
by two of its key members (Jody Watley and Howard Hewett) as well
as for Leee John's group Imagination.
The end of an era for certain people, the beginning of a new one for some
others. That's the way life goes…
