In Da Mix: ISSUE≠06
Posted on Wednesday, September 24 @ 18:12:38 CEST by mfsb

IN DA MIX

It's not a problem that I can't fix, coz' I can do it… IN DA MIX

Hey, how 'R U doin' ? Sorry can't get thru !… Due 2 recent probs with my provider, some of U may not have got the previous issues properly. So feel free 2 drop me a line if so and U'll B provided with the missing infos. This said, the good news of the week is that IDM has some wider exposure, while displayed on King Street's site (www.kingstreetsounds.com), starting from this issue 06

This last week of APR sees the release of the new Kerri Chandler's LP on… King Street. As good as expected as some lucky friends of mine told me recently (IDM comments 2 follow very soon). Meanwhile, just managed to receive a copy of DJ Oji's forthcoming album. Lookin' fluid (and simple) as the true pieces of artistry only do. Deep, soulful, jazzy and groovy, reminding somehow Ron Trent if not Soul II Soul at times with a bit of afro rhythm. A serious offer by Baltimore's supremo that deserves the biggest attention (Poji Records). Spring sounds good, says Stefan @ Dancetracks NYC in his latest newsletter and no doubt, U can trust him, regarding the worldwide reputation of his record store, but we have even more to bear out his assessment. Or shall I say Moodymann has, under the form of a new LP — Silence In The Secret Garden — to be released within a few weeks on Peacefrog. There, you'll find everything from deep soul funk to the most repetitive kind of approach with a drop of balearic light electro jazz (cf. "P.B.C."). Here too, a lot of contrasts, if not the result of internal contradictions from a guy who is to Detroit what Prince was to Minneapolis… Summer may not be here so far but we can slowly feel it soon on the blocks with the release of some atmospheric vibes here and then. Check out the second instalment of a collection entitled Jazzambienttriphopfunkmediteraneansessionsdeephousegroovebah (bless you !) that, although released on an balearic label — La Empresa del Disco — illustrate the diversity of the italian scene, starring DJ Rodriguez, Montefiori Cocktail with a remix by hungarian talent Gäbor Deutsch on a light broken beat vein, an infamous cut called "Arena" by House Royale, some scatt jazz from Duran Y Garcia, the classic "The Ghetto" as revamped by Jestofunk in one of its numerous remixes (the JT Flute Mix), Belladona or DJ Sensei. A selection from Juli Rabal, Jaume Cateura and Max Berti, the three DJ residents of the Jazzbah Club in Menorca (more info : www.jazzbahclub.com).

On the 12 inch front, still under the influence of the last WMC' with a cohort of goodies to be officially released any day now from Harry 'Choo Choo' Romero vs Robert Owens with "I Got Life' that you can find on a limited one-sided pressing on Subliminal to the gorgeous 14 minutes of "Elle" that stands as the best production so far from France's rising star DJ Gregory via "Paixaõ" which is the first release of Julien Jabre on his newly formed label (Elias) and many others…

Much has been said about DJ Spinna but it looks that it will never end from a release to another. Should it be in hip hop, soul or house, the possibilities of the remixer of the Shaun Escoffery's last year anthem ("Days Like This") look really endless. One word to remind you the release of the classy soulful "Reality" which sees our man associated to Rich Medina for what is to be remembered as the first release his own label (Wonderwax). A second word to point out his work as a remixer with nu jazz supermo Mark de Clive-Lowe under the name of Space Cadets on "Gotta Make A Move" for dutch outfit Rednose Distrikt featuring Lady Alma on a soul vein twisted with some soft broken beat arrangements (Kindred Spirits). Watch this space any time now as the band has also a debut-album in the pipeline (more info : www.rushhour.nl).

Looks like on time Ron Trent's partner, Anthony Nicholson, goes into more abstrakt territories from one release to another. The guy in question has also two new works ; the first — "Future Black Fusion" — on Clairaudience, carrying elements of caribbean music melted with a guitar riff "alla" Santana. The second — "Sexy Love Song" — on a cooler easy listening tip with the vocal contribution of regular collaborator, Mikkhiel, being the first non Needs production on their label (Needs Music). On a previous issue, we pointed out the fact that not only Detroit but also Chicago look like back on the map this year. Well Stacy Kidd gives us some more confirmation with the instant jazzy "Lake Street" built on a sample of the Salsoul classic cover version of "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" by Inner Life featuring Jocelyn Brown some 20 years ago (Music 101).

DC producers, Blak Beat Niks are back with another slice of sweetness with their remix of the aptly named "Beauty Comes From Inside" from Bristol duet, The Rurals. A true piece of soulful purity on its own (Pêng). As cool as Diana Waite's "Memories" on a delicate funk groove, co-produced by Choice FM's jock, Andy Ward (Soul Central). Or the plaintive "All I Wanna Do" from a newcomer called Gary Des-Etages whose vocal tones are not that far away from a certain Omar, with a debut-LP to come very soon too (Fer). Droppin' the beats for some pure samba stuff, here comes the brillant "Search For The Sun" by Xantoné Blacq, an already well known name on the british jazz scene, not mentioning Gilles Peterson who has listed this tchoon amongst his favourite last year. Not really surprising to see this release on Vinyl Junkies as it's for true music lovers. A comment that can also be done about "Globetrotter", the first cut to be extracted from Mitchell & Dewbury's debut-LP, in a soul jazz funk vein that reminds some previous works from Jestofunk (Mumo).

Music with soul, music with depth, music with feeling, says the introduction press kit for newly created Upskirt Records. Music with no subgenre or redefinition as house is house… Well, we indeed have both depth and some more in ya face (broken) beat approach on Hugo Madrid's double A-side "Within My Soul/Deeplove". A bit more marked is Far Out Recordings, a label that has built its reputation while revamping afro and brazilian vibes from the past. So if you're into the MAW/DJ Gregory current stuff, no doubt, you should like Troubleman's latest called "Change Is What We Need (Progress)", melting soft jazz funk elements with african percussions over some deep tribal vocal riffs.

Further North leads to Scotland deep house local heroes, Solar House with the title cut from their current Magic Of The City album, with a remix of Kerri Chandler. A friendly soft phonky work to be added to the long list of South Jersey groove manipulator (Large). Cross the North Atlantic Ocean and you're in Norway, the homeland of one of the most progressive jazz scene in the world with the likes of Bugge Wesseltoft, Nils Petter Molvæer and many others. Not to mention André Utvik, a young local self made man who opened the infamous Jazid club before giving birth to the label of the same name. Well thanks again to him as he gave me the chance to be amongst the 25 people in Miami to have a copy of a triple-10" pack simply called JazidClub 1995-2003. Another marvel for the true music lovers featuring a new version of slowSupreme's classic "Granada", an abstract afro uptempo called… "Afro Jazid" by Fantasia and "Nublado", a cool house not (scatt)jazz track by Jerome Van Rossum (on the red plastic) + an original broken beat relifting of Earth, Wind & Fire's classic "Boogie Wonderland" and some shiny electrophunk stuff under the name of "Mye Moro", both from slowSupreme (on the orange one) as well as a brilliant deep house cut from Downtown Brooklyn Inc amongst others, on the yellow one (more info : www.jazid.com).

Finishing this weekly rendez-vous with a piece of vinyl that should appeal to the more in search of da x-perimantel soundz of you. Check out the weird atmospheres as developped on the 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea Version of broken beaty "Showgirlz" by Megablast on german label Stereo Deluxe. A name that speaks for itself !

See ya next week with a selection of cool vibez !
