2-TOP CD Albums of the month

PLANTLIFE The return of Jack SplashCOUNTERFLOW / USA

“Step aside Outkast , we have Plantlife people!” G.Peterson BBC radio comment! I’m totally agree & I can say now:“This one is my nu-pop funk soul album of the year!” Out the 24th of August! Run & & buy it!

THE ROOTS The Tipping PointGEFFEN / USA
The Roots had one of the most anticipated albums of the year on their hands with the Tipping Point, and this is that one in a million album that delivers on the hype. After losing two members of their group left (human beatbox Scratch left for personal reasons, and bass guitarist Ben Kenney joined Incubus), the Roots rebounded and silenced hip-hop purists who grew tired of their stretching of their genre's limits. Consider those boundaries broken.”Boom” , “Star”, & “DinDada” are my favorite tunes!

VAN HUNT - same – CAPITOL / USA
This artist deftly combines the vinyl appeal of Curtis Mayfield & Sly Stone soul with the spunky affections of Prince & Lewis Taylor. The 12 tracks on Van Hunt consist of soul-based yearnings & observations, smoldering with muted falsettos, deep basslines & catchy keyboarding in a gumbo of jazzy R&B and funk, with a dash of psychedelia.

TROUBLEMAN Time Out of MindFAR OUT / UK

Troubleman is a new project from Mark Pritchard, one of the UK’s most prolific producers. Together with Tom Middleton he formed electrofunk-outfit Jedi Knights, made landmark ambient and house as Global Communication and redefined techno as Reload. He also produced drum&bass with Danny Breaks and is making hiphop as Harmonic 33. Mark was thinking of doing some down-tempo stuff when Far Out contacted him for an album but obviously he wanted it to be both authentic and diverse, and not just-another-downtempo-thing. The result is a very soulful and song-based album. It opens with ‘Have A Good Time’, which combines jazz with clever programming. The excellent club-singles ‘Strike Hard’ – what’s in a name! – and ‘Change Is What We Need (Progress)’ are also present of course and prove to be just as powerful on a home stereo. ‘The Righteous Path’ has a touch of library music and ‘Lonely Girl’ is a superb, timeless piece of Latin jazz. Next to recording with live musicians, it was also a challenge for Mark to work with vocalists, something he had hardly ever done before. It's clear that the man knows who to work with because the result is beautiful. There’s the ever-wonderful Nina Miranda (Smoke City/Da Lata) on the bossa ‘Paz’ and the playful ‘Toda Hora’ (I already charted in my last Newsletter & in my summer DJ set since 3 months!) , while Steve Spacek and London diva Eska (New Sector Movements) add their magic to ‘Without You’ and ‘Roll On’, two beautiful pieces of contemporary soul. Surprisingly, in between these songs is the pure Jedi-techno of the title track. Although at first it appears to be kind of a misfit, it has fast become one of my favourites. It’s probably a taste of things to come, as he’s working on a new Reload-album for Warp. In the mean time however, this album is something Mark Pritchard can be very proud of. Full of fresh ideas, clever beats and beautiful songs, ‘Time Out Of Mind’ is a modern masterpiece.

The THIRD UNHEARD
Connecticut Hip Hop 1979/1983STONESTHROW / USA
Stones Throw's recent old school hip-hop compilation, The Third Unheard, opens with Tony Pearson performing as Mr. Magic. The backbeat for what was, in fact, New England's first hip-hop track, "Rappin' with Mr. Magic", sounds remarkably like the break from Chic's "Good Times", famously sampled by New York City's Sugarhill Gang for 1979's "Rapper's Delight". Magic's beat is not "Good Times"-- it's actually a live band re-recording of Vaughn Mason's "Bounce, Rock, Skate..."-- but his track's similarity to "Rapper's Delight", which is generally considered the first successful hip-hop single ever, seems a boldly confrontational move.
If nothing else, The Third Unheard is an extremely refreshing return to the carefree spirit and high-level energy of hip-hop's formative stages. Unburdened by tradition during this early era, Mr. Magic and the Southern Connecticut scene dove headlong into excitement, blissfully unconcerned with the potential influence or importance of their recordings-- let alone whether their art might one day evolve into pop music's most visible form. Absolutely essential in your CDs collection !
Charted in my TOP Dancefloor DJ mix this month!

Various PARTY KELLERCOMPOST / Ger.
The German powerhouse label employs longtime Munich DJ Florian Keller to compile this release. A group of tracks that can truly be called "influential", this is not only an artistic retrospective but also a party-rockin' CD. Rock out to Daniel Sofer's "Scratchin 100 Speakers" and hear a young Dr. Dre showing his skills. Find out where DJ Shadow sampled his famous "Organ Doner" and boogie down to a series of phat Reggae, Hip Hop and Funk tracks. Lacking the proper CD collection to impress hipster friends at your next house party? Look no further than the Party Keller. My favorite tune will be from the group called CHANSON : an accoustic funky folky tune really obscure until now! Dig it!

3-JAZZ FROM ANOTHER PLANET

The EAST NEW YORK JAZZ Ensemble - At the Helm” - IKEF / FOLKWAYS / USA

"Bilal Abdurahman's East New York Ensemble de Music emerged out of the fertile, cross-fertilizing community of Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn, where African, West Indian & black American cultures converged. This rare 1974 disc, originally issued on Folkways, is back in print for the first time in nearly 30 years and what a gem it is! At The Helm is a gorgeously careening collection of indo-jazz that draws heavily on the near and far eastern sounds of Turkey, Korea, North Africa, India and China and threads them into a distinctively forceful Black Jazz idiom. In his lifetime, Bilal had always referred to this meld as a kind of 'Black Magical Music' and the tight, energetic compositions on this unsung masterpiece only supports the elevated, otherworldly claims. Take one listen to their rendition of Freddie Hubbard's beautiful 13 minute epic, 'Sun Flower', and you'll hear why this is a must for fans of rare groove & spiritual black jazz." Personally , “Melvana” tune is my favorite!
A great reissue from Locust-Ikef crew.

The PYRAMIDS - Lalibela – PYRAMID MUSIC / USA inc. the crazy tune “Indigo” : obscure deep spirit afro jazz rare & never reissued! A must!

Various - IMPRESSED vol.2 - Gilles Peterson compilation – UNIVERSAL / UK

The second installment of Gilles Peterson's collection of unique, rare and beautiful British jazz unearths another fantastic set of tracks from the late'60s-early '70s period, opening with the previously unheard and utterly fantastic Amancio D'Silva piece. Excellent stuff.I’ve got most of these on original vinyl pressings & I really think since a long time , someone needs to reissue these majors jazz works! Thanks maestro G.P! Neil Ardley “Will u walk a little faster” is my fav. at the moment!

4- Latest release from ZIMPALA “Pas même le cri d’un oiseau”single on 4LUX Rcds !
Soundclips check :
http://www.4lux.com

"One of France's longest-serving nujazz producers, ZIMPALA keeps improving with each release. Intricate drum programming matches the single's gorgeous synth sweeps and Rhodes threads. Jimpster's house mix works like a dowel over wet concrete-smooth to perfection. (writer:Tomas A.Palermo)review in XLR8R - US magazine San Francisco June/July 04

& SomeWorldwide DJs feedback :
Rainer Truby: “A great release. Jimpster remixes are hot and the original is pretty charming too! (will chart!)”

for journalists, artists & guests durin’ any kind of events. Any serious request , please contact Fred BENEIX : zimpala@wanadoo.fr & I will give u more comments about this
project * : “Wine4Melomanes”
The wine tasting sessions 'Wine4Melomanes' is put together by myself and the resident sommelier from the selected wine company , and concerns wines tasted, supplied and chosen by the venue hosting us. This tasting session has its originality by being mixed with a few carefully selected tracks chosen by the DJ for solely hedonistic purposes: preparatory work is needed as soon as the venue is selected to define the rhythm and colour of the event.
Wine4Melomanes is a media apart and an original means to accompany your traditions and culture and to share it in a new way.
