Pennsylvania
main city Don King Britt has certainly not been waiting for 2000 (sorry,
2K1 in fact) to enter a new millenium as brilliantly demonstrated by his music
which would push famous Philly Sound into contemporary if not futuristic forms.
His Fivesixrecordings production company and label's first comp has a title –
This Is What Radio Should Sound Like – speaking for itself on a much
wider scale than the sole music lover point of view…
Hey Britt, wassup man ?
Always on the run…
Always sir... On a
mission !
Were those exercices of
you under The SYLK 130 moniker a way to go back to your roots and give yourself
but also the crowd a more precise idea of where you're comin' from ?
Exactly...SYLK130 always
represents my roots and upbringing. Even on the new CD (coming soon), we are
returning to the old funk raw and dirty....
If so, should they be
taken as the basement to what you're doing nowadays ?
Exactly ! The dusty
basement...
Seems like you've always
had a clear vision of what you was up for. Impression or reality ?
Definite reality... I do
what I feel, especially now that I have my own label… I plan to make some nice
moves.
A sort of past, present &
future then…
More future now...
Could well be the history
of a whole life at the end of the day…
That's the goal... To
have a tome of work that represents I am, what I love and who I shared it
with......
There's never been that
buzz around you. Is this that you prefer staying aside ? A state of mind which
is basically yours ? A sign of Introversion ? A necessity for you in order to
stay focussed on what's gonna be next ?
Not sure what u mean.
Buzz as in blow up .I like to quote my boy Dozia. "It's always good to be up and
coming"......hehehehe
You've ended up creating
your own company, surrounded by a sort of home people clan. Have you somehow
been influenced by the way most famous PIR headz Gamble & Huff used to work 30
years ago ?
Funny... I have been
working with Gamble and Huff on remixing the catalog and I am learning so much
from them from business point of view as well as in the studio......so I am
getting first hand love !
Would gathering forces be
a necessity as opposed to individualism which has been pushed as the ultimate
behaviour on or Western/capitalistic societies ?
It's funny... We have all
been conditioned here to really be out for self... For me it isn't the case,
even though I do a lot alone... But a team is totally neccessary to grow and
create... The best and most succesful people have a strong team behind them !
Your view about today's
society ? The record industry ?
The record industry is in
a very interesting time at the moment It's at a time where the indie is going to
have the voice... The majors have the money but no clue..... The indies have the
creativity and guerrilla tactics and now with the advancement of technology, we
now have the machine... Slower but successful none the less.
Any solution in mind ?
To get forward thinking A&R in
these fucking positions !
Would you mind having a few
words about your entreprise and its components for a better understanding ?
Well Fivesixrecordings is my
new label of 1 year. We are distributed through Studio Distribution (who have
deals with distr in each territory) which so far has been awesome. We have
released 6 12" and 2 albums to date, the newest being This Is What Radio Should
Sound Like... It's a collection of the 12" we put out as well as brand new
tracks from all the artists that will be on the label. I focus on good music. We
have rock/alt., we have broken beat, house, soul etc. We just love good music.
I just signed DKD for the States (Dego Daz and kaidi Tatham) and a Sun Ra
Tribute project that will be coming early next year. It's a home to all my
friends and collegues......
The way you work together ?
We have a team. Studio
Distribution, Cause n Effect (publicity in Europe), Backspin Media (publicity
US), Sharen Norden (manager in Europe), Elite Booking (Europe), Roblife (booking
worldwide), Media Creature (licencing) ... We all work for one thing : to make
Fivesixrecordings successful......
The next step(s) ?
To tackle films and
soundtracks !
What does Blaze's Keep
Hope Alive suggest you ?
Just that.. Keep Hope
Alive in your soul.
Are we supposed to enter
a new cycle when talent would be re-recognized for its own ?
I hope !
Some notorious faces
incl. Joe Claussell and Lars Bartkuhn (of Needs) have agreed there was to be a
revolution. Looks like you may agree in regards to the title you've chosen for
this comp ?
This is our first step in
the revolt !
D'you feel like the crowd
generally speaking has a thirst for other things ?
Everyone is ready. Isee
it when I go to the movies especially. Movies like Eternal Sunshine, I Love
Huckabees and Garden State are box office smashes, but so left. It's bananas
They are just presented in a way that the general public can appreciate it.
Like the Neptunes ! Very forward thinking.
How come then should they
know facing the lack of global media exposure of the music we're believin' in ?
They hear it in
commercials now. They hear the music in movies and in stores, but they don't
have access to it. Itunes has opened some ears !
Here comes what's
supposed to be the 20th question for this time. Then make you choice telling us
about the one that you'd like to give an answer to…
If a major was to offer
you a deal would u take it ?
Hell yes, if we have
total control over the creative and budgets. Then if they want to put the logo
on and take credit, so be it. I just need to get the music out to the masses
for change !
