Although
living – or shall I say surviving ? - has probably never been so hard than in
those disturbed times for most of us here, I betcha none of us would imagine
himself having another kind of existence. And you know why ? Because, we simply
have found a sense to our lives as opposed to a vaste majority of people. Sure,
we sometimes find it difficult to pay the bills, but there's nothing like what
we're living. Nothing like vibing for doing what we do. Nothing like freedom…
As you probably all know – and if you doubt
it, then I would humbly suggest you to reconsider the whole thing – there's a
price to pay for everything… And even more when deciding to do your own stuff
against all ods, starting with the current globalization process of our
societies. A process which tends to abort all signs of personality in favour of
things supposedly reputed to fit the tastes of the biggest amount of people at
the same time… So the choice is quite simple. Either, you end up going into the
latest while jumping on the wagon with the potential risk of losing your own
foudaments, unless it's a deliberate choice of yours. Either, you keep on doing
your sh.. with no assurance of seing your work recognized on a wide scale but
the certitude of remaining who you deeply are. In such a case, chances to see
you feeling isolated on your own environment are great. Not to mention the fact
that you're not even sure to make yourself a decent way of living moneywise.
Then you'll have to count on some serious agenda, either knowing people at the
right position, either prgressively making it on your own. But one thing's for
sure : you'd rarely achieve anything like this on your strict own. And it's
exactly where the problem stands nowadays, with the DJ's taking the
musicians'seats on the dancefloor with the launching of the first clubs then the
producers'ones on the process of purveying music right after the death of disco
some 25 years ago. People who, for many of them, tend to sort of find hard
sharing the spotlights with anyone else after such a long period spent on their
own devices to make their niches on the circuit…
This said, each situation reaches its
limits one day or another, leaving of us whatever we may do in the obligation to
reach a new level. With the DJ's now wearing different hats from production and
eventually become musicians themselves to the business side of the things while
launching their companies, it has become clear that they hardly can keep on
dealing with everything alone anymore. Not to mention the fact that they have to
establish partnerships in order to maximize the visibility of what they're into
due to the lack of mass media support. This is no doubt a question of survival
as it's probably the biggest challenge we may all have to face. And when I say
WE, I mean the whole scene : DJ's, labels, specialised record stores, dedicated
press, having in mind the obligation which is ours to support each member of the
community, thus providing it with the necessary incomes to its survival if not
growth preferably.
Here again, it's nothing but a question of
self conscience. United we (oughtta) stand. Isolated when not divided, we're
gonna die… MFSB
