PROFILE: Henry Maldonado - DJ/Producer/Remixer - Brooklyn, NY
New York, stand up, Henry Maldonado is in da bildin! One of NYC’s most under-rated producers, his music has appeared on numerous record labels including Henry Street, King Street, Maxi, MAW and Jellybean Recordings. Some of our personal favorite jams include SUNSHINE (MAW Records), BOOM (Paradise Garage 2 compilation album, Pschent Recordings, France) and HARAMBEE (Strictly Rhythm DOWN DEEP Compilation, track 5).
Henry is presently in the studio putting the finishing touches on his album and started a weekly Brooklyn residency. The party is called Culture Clash and it takes place every Friday at The Fix – 110 Bedford AVE at North 11th Street in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. It gets underway at 10PM (when the coffee crowd leaves) admission is FREE!!! BounceFM.Com is proud to present and excellent DJ/Producer and a good friend, Henry Maldonado! Here’s some of what he had to say:
FIRST RECORD YOU EVER BOUGHT
Soul Sonic Force, Planet Rock
OF ALL THE MUSIC IN THE WORLD, WHY DID YOU CHOOSE HOUSE?
I didn’t. . . . I chose Hip-Hop when I was old enough to choose. I’m not talking about Kanye West either, more like Fearless Four, Davey D, and Cold Crush . . .
WHATS THE MOST COMMON MISTAKE MADE IN HOUSE MUSIC?
Getting caught up in trends . . .
DEFINE HOUSE MUSIC FOR THOSE THAT DON’T KNOW?
It’s the sound track to life …that is, until you mention you’re a Junior Vasquez fan. Then they run you out of The Shelter
TALK TO US ABOUT THE CURRENT STATE OF THE HOUSE MUSIC INDUSTRY, WHAT ARE YOUR OBSERVATIONS?
. . . House music has not catered to a younger demographic in decades. The crowds at the main parties are faithful, the DJs are faithful and god bless them all but we are all getting old. The sound hasn’t progressed enough . . .
WHERE DO YOU SEE OPPORTUNITIES FOR GROWTH IN THE HOUSE MUSIC INDUSTRY IN THE NEXT 3 TO 5 YEARS?
Underground or deep house seems to be the only genre where everyone runs around as if the sky is falling . . .
HOW DID YOU FIRST GET INVOLVED IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY?
DJ gigs led to production and my partners and I met Kenny Dope through a friend. He was solo then and owned a label called Dope Wax. We were to put out a bunch of tracks on his label but it never happened.
ON WHAT RECORD LABELS HAS YOUR MUSIC APPEARED?
The tracks that were supposed to be on Dope Wax ended up on this new label called Strictly Rhythm under the House 2 House name. Also had releases on Henry Street, King Street, Maxi, MAW, Jellybean, Yoshi Toshi and others.
WHAT ARE THE VARIOUS NAMES YOU’VE RECORDED UNDER?
House 2 House, Urban Rhythm, DeJaVu, Rhythm Section, Groove Culture (Henry Street) and the final Son of Sound …that one takes me home.
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE COUNTRIES AND CLUBS YOU’VE DJ’ED AROUND THE WORLD?
. . . My favorite so far was in Croatia. That little country has a pretty healthy scene in Zagreb.
WHICH DO YOU PREFER – SONGS OR TRACKS AND WHY?
It’s a myth to think that if you put a vocal on a track, it automatically makes it better.
