PROFILE: Kerri Chandler – DJ/Producer/Remixer – New Jersey
No house music time capsule will be complete without a contribution from house music all star, Kerri Chandler. His productions are the standard to which all others should be measured. During the course of his career, his music demonstrates consistency, quality and dance floor reaction. From his initial productions (DRINK ON ME) to current creations (BAR A THYM) his signature kick drums and basslines have been often imitated but never duplicated. It is BounceFM.Com’s pleasure to present to you Kerri Chandler. Here’s some of what he had to say:
WALK US THROUGH YOUR APPROACH TO MAKING A SONG FROM INITIAL CONCEPT TO FINISHED PRODUCT:
. . . I use two sets of studios in my place. One is all digital plugins and such, and the other is all analogue, just a room, a grand piano and a fireplace. So I kinda get the feel as I need.
FAVORITE SMELL(S)
Cheeba . . .
RUNNING UP IN BROOKLYN CELEBRATES LIFE IN THE BK - HOW DID THIS PROJECT COME ABOUT?
Eric (Eman) came to my house, kinda just hanging out and vibing sharing music and we started drinking Johnny Walker Black and about half way into the bottle I start playing keys and he started singing.
ONE OF MY ALL TIME FAVORITE TRACKS IS "STAY", THE DRUMS, THE MINIMAL GUITAR RIFF. TELL US ABOUT THIS SENSUAL SONG. WHO WAS IT WRITTEN ABOUT? WHAT WAS YOUR INSPIRATION FOR THIS SONG?
. . . I thought about a few ex girlfriends when I did the vocals, and I was going crazy at the time with the one I was with. So it was kinda a release.
HOW DO YOU PREPARE FOR A DJ GIG?
. . . I never just show up with records. . . . I like to get the vibe of the place and the crowd. I hang out a bit meet a few people, have a few drinks, check out the DJ before me, listen to the sound of the club . . . .
WHICH 1 RECORD WOULD YOU WISH PEOPLE WOULD STOP PLAYING?
. . .I'm not really into R&B house remixes, because they just don't need them.
WHATS THE MOST COMMON MISTAKE MADE IN HOUSE MUSIC?
Copying someone else, or to many remixes for production - for DJing - Playing it safe or tracks all night long.
WHAT IS YOUR MOST MEMORABLE HOUSE MUSIC MOMENT?
First time at Sir Henry's Ireland.
CRYSTALLIZE YOUR CONTRIBUTION TO HOUSE MUSIC IN ONE SENTENCE.
Basslines and Kick Drums.
